Physical VHS Montage
During the previous trimester I put together a VHS animation workshop in which participants were taught how to animate by cutting and pasting physical VHS tape: http://www.worm.org/home/view/event/6082 At the time I did not put too much emphasis on this in relation to my overall artistic practice, but I figured that this project had much more potential than a mere workshop could contain. The physical act of tape cutting allows for a different kind of montage that escapes those of classical cinema. Noise can become an integrated and esthetic part of the film montage. I am currently examining the potential of these parts and new creative cuts besides the horizontal and the vertical and putting together a script and sequence of material to work with in this process.
Tip Top Orchestra Document
The Tip Top Orchestra is not a living orchestra anymore, but a dead one. There are no more concerts being given and there are no more rehearsals. What remains is the visual and auditive material that was made during it's existence. These were always on redundant material. Now with the 50th anniversary of Terry Riley's 'In C' I wonder... What would it mean to reissue this recursive orchestra and how could this be done? I am currently thinking of a way to showcase the material with this idea conceptually imbedded.
