Reading from In-depth: Time Consciousness and Discipline in the Industrial Revolution

  • The timeclock became the gatekeeper to the factory.
  • The pocket watch became the first accessible time piece for the working class. To them it was also an investment, while also using it as a tool to combat the time manipulation experienced at work.
