Description

SOUNDS OF MARMALADE: Jam session with stuff invites the public to join a cozy experimental jam session; With D.I.Y 'musical instruments' and sound-based constructs, no musical knowledge required! Synths, mics and recording equipment provided, as well as a little crafting station to guide you in making your own ♪♫ Stuff ♪♫ .

SI25 EVENT SCHEDULE

  • 10-15h: Set-Up & Private Experimenting
  • 15-18h: Workshop & Experimenting Open to the public
  • 18h30: Jam Session Performance

Cookbook

We base the jam session on the initial prototyping class with Joseph where we gathered noise making materials and then we made our own piezo cables. Experimenting the whole day and then gathering for 2 jam sessions which were awesome.

survey pad

Charlie also made a survey which gathered some answers, basis and inspiration for the event.

We gathered these first to start experimenting:

A Mixer(we rented the Behringer X2222 Mixer from WdKA)

3 mini amplifiers (Harley Benton MA-5 Miniamp)Piezo mics, Luidspreker kabel, jackplugs

solder

a lot of materials that might make interesting sounds like tin cans, rubber bands, long pieces of plastic, metal bowls, little balls, plastic containers

Piezo instrument making process

Needed Materials;
  • Shielded audio cable
  • Piezo disc
  • Solder and soldering iron
  • Hot glue gun
  • Wire cutters
  • Audio jack connector (guitar jack)
1st step;

Cut the audio cable according to desired lenght, remove the shielding to expose the wires. Cut the two extra wires for they won’t be needed. Remove the casing of the remaining two wires (from the photos red and black one).

2nd step;

Solder the black wire (the one that will be connected to the ground of the input part of the cable, the negative part) to the copper part of the disc, and solder the red wire to the middle (ceramic, positive) part of the disc. (Preferably get a disc that is already soldered to the wires so you don’t risk burning off the fragile parts of the disk). Cover the disk with hot glue to protect it.

3rd step;

(If you have a disk already with wires attached) If you have cable casing, put it over the stripped parts and move away so you can solder, attach the red to the red and the black to the black through soldering, bring the cable casing over the attached cables and use a lighter to tighten it.

4th step;

Follow the first step on the other end of the cable.

5th step;

Solder the black cable, (the one connected to the copper part of the disc, to the ground of the audio jack connector (negative part, the bottom or the sleve, and the red to the positive of the audio jack connector. Tighten the strain relief damps to make sure when you pull it off the preamp the wires don’t get disconnected.

After making the piezo cable and gathering materials the next part is just experimenting until an interesting sound comes out of the process. This part is really fun but I broke my cable trying different materials so be careful doing this, don't rush.

Event Rider

Items

  • The big mixer (we can also ask WORM for this I think they have it in the soundstudio)
  • Piezo mics and Condenser mics (XPUB1)
  • AUX Cables (UBIK)
  • D.I.Y. Instruments + materials (XPUB1)
  • Blankets, rugs, pillows & low tables/boxes (UBIK+XPUB)
  • ...

Space

Needed: Approx. 3.5m²

The vision: A cozy circle of rugs, pillows and low tables. Picnic-like jamming set-up. Synths and recording material as well as the cabling of all the instruments will have to be prototyped. -> We need sufficient plugs

Rider for UBIK:

Power outlet for the middle of the room

Pillows(maybe from Pirate Bay)

Mixer? - Let's ask Joseph today if we can use the mixer he brought to our jam session.

Time

18:30 on the 20th.

Ca. 1h30 for the whole 'workshop'. Incl.: Time to play-around and experiment & a dedicated time-slot for the recorded jam session. We expect it to be scheduled towards the end of the event.
