Session one
WHAT, HOW, WHY
What For my graduation project I made a film installation called The Body Never Lies. It was shown at the ‘white box room’ at theater The Nieuwe vorst. The public could enter in groups of 10. The film installation consists of 3 projections. Video’s that show dance on film and observations of people’s movements on the streets. In the video’s there will also appear movement exercises. In the room there are mirrors so the audience is confronted with their own movement. The installation ask the question what is the relationship between the body, gender and movement.
Make notes here: More detail about what we see: screens with dance and screen with everyday actions (on the street) location, and how the screens are installed; The detailed content in each projections or screens. Title of the article? Brief detail about the learning of movement
version 2 For my graduation project I made a film installation called The Body Never Lies. The film installation consists of three projections. The video’s show dance on film. The movements in the dance are based on everyday movements. In the video there are also scenes of an observation of people’s everyday movements on the streets. By text there will also appear movement exercises in the video for the audience to execute. Around the space there are mirrors so the audience is confronted with their own movement. The installation ask the question what is the relationship between the body, gender and movement.
How The project stated after reading in a one world article that we decide for ourself in a second if someone is male or female. As some one with a dance background I immediately thought about the movement or posture the person would have to make this judgement on. I did research on how we learn movement.
I worked together with Marleen Hendrickx she is a former dancer. For the music I worked with Arjan
Why The installation aimed to create awareness of gender norms around movement. (please unpack this, what is at stake with movement and gender) In society there are certain ideas about how man and women should carry their body.
Project 2
What A documentary about young athletes who fail to achieve their goals. In the documentary you hear the story of three 18 year old professional athletes. Two field hockey players and one soccer player. They all have played in national teams, but at some point quit or got kicked off the team. The red thread in the documentary is a comparison of the athletes careers to trains. This comparison is made in a spoken word text, that is shown through out the documentary along side images of trains. We don’t all have the same speed and arrive at different destinations. We also see them playing their sport as well as interview shots. I made this documentary together with my friend casper in 2021. The spoken word is written by Amara van de Elst.
How Casper and I both knew some athletes who we asked to be part of the documentary. We followed them with a camera for two months.
Why Most of the time you hear about professional athletes and their succes stories. We all know being the best in your sport is hard work and that it comes with a cost, but and the end there is always a first or second place medal. We found it important to tell the other side of the story. To start the conversation on what is succes? The athletes in the documentary show that going after a dream is more important than a prize.
