Physical Memory EMBODIED IMAGES–EMBODIED MEMORIES Hans Belting, An Anthropology of Images: Picture, Medium, Body This text introduces three different perceptional concept when understanding and studing images within history. Picture, Medium, and Body. Images circulate in our imagination and memories, they colonise our bodies. Thinking about the concept of the image as a rather malleable but consensual entity, generated and sema- tised but nevertheless still performed! We face a series of perceptional procedures when un- derstanding images in language. The conception of Images, their significance and compre- hension within language is often tighten to many moral, political, and cultural conditions, those which are simultaneously projected by our relation to their subjects when we’re reading them. Therefore they’re not necesarily defined by their visibility but its coeexistence with the beholder. The Body. However, the frame through which we understand them, referrers not only to the “what” we’re seeing but to the “how” it is constituted and in fact composed and framed through the “picture.” Herein is where mediation differs from “idea” and “execution” and adds its own framing; not differencing images from living bodies or lifeless object, just an image. Sophie Calle ‘True Stories,56 short stories’ page 91; ‘Wait for me’,Actes Sud,2018 In ‘Wait for me’ Sophie describes a memory of her childhood, being at the beach and how some older children made her feel like she was excluded. She describes how they whispered and laughed at her and tried to get rid of her by running away when she tried coming closer. This story talks about the human experience of feeling unwelcome and not belonging to oth- ers or maybe even to the world...a feeling I believe many if not everyone has experienced. She raises this human condition of feeling left behind by telling a personal story. The book is a collection of these kinds of personal stories/memories. Next to every text is a black and white photo that belongs to the memory being described. In ‘Wait for me’ it’s a photo of a very young Sophie standing on a boardwalk looking very kind and innocent. In the book Sophie combines text describing the context of each image.This combination of image and text throughout the book shows how text combined with image, just like a film, can give you a fuller experience of a moment. . The title insinuates that all of the stories are real and nonfiction, yet some sound so absurd, playing with our willingness to believe. ( sus- pension of disbelief ) Synopsis - Luca Tichelman
