Irma's notes on past, current, future works

From XPUB & Lens-Based wiki

Last Work: Fortunewood installation

What: I've made an interactive audio-visual installation, where a person gets's a personal counseling advice of about 30sec.

More descriptions about the audio-visual work and how does it interact with people.

The location you would like to exhibit the work and why?

[Great! What do you want the person using the device to think or feel?]

Why: Because I like to play with the longing of a person (also myself) to want counseling or advice from a "bigger" other.

How to relate finger prints to personal character?

How: Mixing audio fragments from Hollywood voices to create a new story. By developing an interactive situation where the public has the option to scan their fingerprint. [Why is it important that the voices come from Hollywood stars?] [Should the person ideally really believe their finger is being scanned?]

What issues did the work address?

  • The impact of a straight forward advice
  • The Hollywood setting raises the question of the influence of film on our personal choices.
  • How personal is or could a finger-scan be?

What is the relation between previous work?

It is about longing for an answer from a "bigger" other that could offer you a guideline in life. Being responsible for your own choices is hard, the feeling that someone or thing knows what is "best" or has an overview of a "bigger" plan is comforting.

What is the relation to a larger context?

Debating in manipulation, what is the language of the truth? Manipulating voices to create a new story, it relates to new Adobe software. The relationship of counseling, why do you "need" or long for a guideline? Why does there have to be an opinion of a "bigger" other? [sounds also like a spiritual question to me]

What influenced the work?

  • The article about the god helmet
  • Scifi movies as Eternal Sunshine of a spotless mind, Vanilla Sky, etc.)
  • The so-called Dutch Directness?

[Having just thought about it I realize that my questions are all around the notion of "How real do you want it to be for the person experiencing the installation?" Just a thought: Could it be interesting for you to also create something that plays with "real expectations" of people?]

Current work/ in developing process

What: A short video filmed in an amateurism style from a point of view shot of men. The film plays with the cliché elements of a cheap porn movie where a Girl next door is observed. She is wearing nothing but a towel when she is hanging about in her kitchen. When there is an interaction with the two persons the hand of the men pulls her towel off her body and discovers a transparent part of her.

You are directing the film or making it from fond footages?

Who are you potential audiences? [Nice! Are you gonna use porn language?]

Why: I want to play with story structure of the film language of a porn movie, with the expectations of the viewer and what will happen if a video is not presented as an Art video.

It’s about the exploration of the porn film language or art films? Or they’re related?

How: Chroma, motion tracking.

How would you like to present this work? Like the venues, galleries or online or?

Do I understand it rightly: you’re making an art sexual film but not going to present it in an arty way.

How is this similar to the last work?

  • Plays with longing/expectation.
  • Plays with the recipe of a certain storytelling

How is this different to the last work?

  • Different medium.
  • different Platform
  • not presented as Art

Who can help you?

Technical advice: Barend

Practice list: Location -> Ellen Artice -> Someone new? Margje or me? Hand model -> .... Help filming - > Fraser

Conceptual advise Ine, David, Simon, Paula, etc.

Time table

If location and actress available -> before the 4th of April. Otherwise working on test and then done in April [Nice!]

Where can it lead

  • I want to place it within the porn platform, to analyze reactions.

But also use this video as an FILMPROP for the next short movie which could be part of a future chain movie. [What is a Filmprop?]

How to you collect and analyze the reactions from viewers?

  • More technical knowledge
  • raising questions about the language of media en expectation.

What could the next step be?

Short movie where this film is an FILMPROP part of the story of a new character, 'The angry white men'

What is the form?

Short film scene, that also is connected with other works.

Who is in your neighberhood

Tod Solondz - Director of Hapiness (1998) Charlie Kaufman - Director and scriptwriter Yes Men Renzo Martens

You’re making art works from expectations, both the last and current work. It seems to be your interest of self-direction. I found it's very interesting since there are tellers and listeners and interactions between them. I wonder to you personally, what do you think about the influences of expectations to people?
