1st workshop on the appropriation, modification and intervention on an (home) appliance (WAMIA)

Once seen as part of a mechanization process, home appliances are now seen as part of a digitization and "smartization" process. The 1st workshop on the appropriation, modification and intervention on an (home) appliance (WAMIA) is not dedicated to such (grand) narratives of an apparent culture of technical innovation. Rather, WAMIA is searching for a way to get your hands dirty on, in and around the device! In its first edition, WAMIA is dedicated to the topic of autonomous robotic vacuum cleaners and is accompanied by the following questions and thoughts:

  • how do robotic vacuum cleaners clean?
    • reverse engineering of circuits
    • observation of behavior
    • reverse engineering based on imitation / reenactment ("what is it like to be a robotic vacuum cleaner?")
  • planned obsolescence of home appliances
  • robotic home appliance fantasies of the past (Claus Scholz "MM7", ...)
  • how much of an "cybernetic tortoise/turtle" (Walter, Zemanek, Papert, ...) can we find in a robotic vacuum cleaner?
  • luddist and feminist critique of boys&toys
  • irony/parody of autonomous robots in art/design (Monochrom "der exot", Paul Granjon "Fluffy Tamagotchi", Sašo Sedlaček "Beggar Robot", Akira Kanayama(Gutai) "Pollock’s drips painting machine", ... )
  • robotic vacuum cleaner as publishing platform?
  • appropriation, modification and intervention

Location

aquarium, 4th floor, Wijnhaven 61 3011 WJ Rotterdam

Schedule

2023-2-9 Thursday

  • 10:00 - 13:00 introduction & reverse engineering
  • 14:30 - 17:00 reverse engineering and call for ideas for the next days

2023-2-10 Friday

  • 10:00 - 13:00 working on devices
