{GLOSSARY for publishing}

"It matters what matters we use to think other matters with; it matters what stories we tell to other stories with; it matters what knots knot knots, what thoughts think thoughts, what descriptions describe descriptions, what ties tie ties" Donna Haraway

Every word is a node of the system that relates with other nodes in order to map or suggest connections between their meanings. By placing words from different contexts next to each other, this diffractive glossary aims to cross-references and motivations of the publishing practice. In the end, the idea so far is to start suggesting reflections through notations that are not just focused on their own existence but on the others too.

Name: A GLOSSARY FOR A DIFFRACTIVE PUBLISHING PRACTICE

  1. 3

1. What do you want to make?

A Glossary for a diffractive publishing practice on arts, which is a system of words that are connected to each other to suggest reflections on current publishing practices. The idea is to use the structure of a glossary to cross-references among the already existing publishing vocabulary/annotations with other vocabularies inside other realms of knowledge such as anthropology, science, cybernetics, and philosophy. Highlighting problematics and bringing up questions over methods, processes, and infrastructure.

2. How do you plan to make it?

First, because I'm using the form of a glossary. I plan to unbundle the idea of the glossary itself, which means unpacking its structure, recognizing its impact on the construction of knowledge, and exploring what role it has been played inside the publishing format. For this, I'm gonna use the Aquarium 1.0 event to make a quick "glossary of glossaries". I would propose to participants to make it collectively that night within three different moments. In the first one, I'll ask them to help me finding glossaries inside the library (10min). For the second one, I'll read some questions and let people look through some of the glossaries. Afterward, I'll ask them to write down the words that come to their minds that could answer those questions. The questions will aim to reflect on the structure, hierarchy, language..etc. of them (10min). And at the last moment, I'll ask people to try giving an explanation of those written down words.

After that, I'm gonna try to decide the structure of the glossary and what would be the system to collect it. But so far I'm gonna continue reading the references I have, while I'm annotating words, writing in markdown, translating it using pandoc, and laying it out.

My idea is to grow the vocabulary and its explanations while at the same time I'm managing to map a structure and methods to share it. It's in my mind a machine of words that is growing and thinking itself when it's being created. Publishing as a living being?

3 What is your timetable? ---> Aquarium 1.0: "Glossary of glossaries" ---> compiling as many words I can, with its explanation ---> sorting them out with a system (symbols, visuals, cross-references) ---> creating the infrastructure to self-host it (temporary garden) ---> figure out ways to make it public making explicit the glossary itself. How to circulate it? ---> Aquarium 2.0: "trying out to publish the glossary"

4 Why do you want to make it? I wanna make it because I've been... 5 Who can help you and how? 6 Relation to previous practice 7 Relation to a larger context 8 References/bibliography
