Kebab Connection (2004)
  • Title: Kebab Connection
  • Year: 2004
  • Director: Anno Saul

Annotation:

There are different stories in this movie that fall together. The main character Ibo is a moviemaker who wants to make the first German Kungfu movie. Aside he makes successful commercials for the eatery King of Kebab owned by his uncle Achmet. Ibo is in a relationship with German girl Titzi and this relationship is in danger when Titzi gets pregnant. Because of the pregnancy differences between Turkish and German culture arise and Titzi and Ibo have fight over keeping the baby and the fatherhood of Ibo. Ibo is kicked out of the house by his father because of the pregnancy and he and his father are not on speaking terms, Ibo is being exiled. Ibo himself needs to embrace the upcoming fatherhood and learns by trial and error, also to prove Titzi he can be a good father. Titzi herself keeps working for her audition for a play.

In between you see in the movie a gang of 3 men extorting King of Kebab and the long lasting clash between Turkish King of Kebab and a greek tavern called Bouzouki.

In the end everything comes together. The clash between the Turkish and Greek restaurant is solved by the exchange and acceptance of a seemingly same dish (food with wine leaves). The gang of 3 men is defeated by Ibo and this is turned into a final commercial which is both promoting King of Kebab and tavern Bouzouki. Ibo proves he can be a good father and marries Titzi. The relationship between Ibo and his father is restored, issues of differences in cultures are resolved. And finally, Ibo is offered to make his first German Kung fu movie.

What is the role of food in this movie?

  • In the opening scene Titzi says she will make dinner for her favorite movie director.
  • Food is here a commodity in a sense that commercials are made to boost the business.
  • It embodies the long lasting rivalry between Turkish and Greek kitchen and culture.
  • To pay protection money and cooking (well) doesn't goes well.
  • Titzi arranges a special dinner for Ibo to announce that she is pregnant. She does that by having prepared fortune cookies with the messages 'You become father' and 'I'm pregnant' inside the cookies.
  • When Ibo has lunch with his family he brings up the pregnancy of Titzi.
  • The gang of 3 men starts to revolt in King of Kebab when the tripe soup (penssoep) doesn't taste as it should be. In the end scene when there is a big fight between the gang and all the other characters, one of the gang members's face is put in the pan with soup. He then says that the soup tastes good again.
  • Food brings together the Turkish and Greek restaurant in the end.
  • In the final scene Ibo encourages his newborn daughter to say baba (father) to him. Instead she says 'Döner'.
