What are you working on?

Figuring out what to do for the rest of the year. Doing theoretical research, brainstorming, and continuing projects from the first year (Building cameras).

What is your idea for the rest of the year?

Working on a project that revolves around a camera, not as a tool, but as a comment on the ubiquity of cameras in itself.

A continuation of a project from the third trimester, GeoCam, which revolves around the idea of recycling already existing images rather than creating new ones. With the influx of the mobile phones and the different styles of photography (The selfie), what is the role of the stand-alone camera? What is the influence of digital photography on DIY camera culture? Can we reach a point where we can all create our own basic digital camera, opposed to the previously easy to make pinhole camera?

What is your media object?

The history and development of the lens, the visual styles and side effects that come with it and how we perceive history based on these visual elements.

Lenses have always fascinated me. The camera often plays the role of a black box, in a literal sense. On one end is the light sensitive sensor or film, on the other end is the lens which directs the light to this medium. The importance of the camera is solely to make sure no light is let in that doesn't come through the lens, it's the lens that truly determines how the light is formed on the medium, how the colors are rendered, how the translation of real life is made to the photograph.
