From october 6 to19 The Force of Freedom exhibited Straight Outta Tumblr in W139 in Amsterdam.
S.O.T. was an installation consisting of two projections and New Aesthetic David. One of the projections displayed images random images from our tumblr blog, the other one the background gradients of our website.
The ‘New Aesthetic David’ is a 190 centimeter high EPS sculpture of a standing nude male. It consists out of 190 layers of laser cut styrofoam, which are stacked on top of each other. The figure stands in a relaxed counterpose and stares at his iPhone which he is holding in his left hand.
The sculpture is made out of a low-resolution digital model downloaded from the Google Sketchup 3D warehouse. This model was adjusted and translated into stacks using 3D software and cut out of Styrofoam sheets with a laser cutting machine. By gluing these 435 laser cut pieces on top of each other the New Aesthetic David arose.
New Aesthetic David is a contemporary interpretation of the well-known renaissance statue by Michelangelo. This version of the David is made out of modern materials using digital fabrication techniques and standing in a more contemporary pose, staring at his smartphone.
