Project 3: LOCKERBIE (2019)
- During this project, my focus was investigating the theory of ‘Trauma and Transcendence’ as inspiration and theoretical basis for my photographic practice. This investigation is aligned to my final photographic project conducted whilst studying at Plymouth University, the project itself is based around small towns, which have hosted a significant tragic event or even a disaster. As I have only just began shooting this project, it is unknown to me on whether I should pursue this into a masters degree. However, it is the application of a theoretical psychological study to photography, which is something I find incredibly interesting.
The project began with photographing Lockerbie, a town where Pan Am Flight 103, a regularly scheduled Pan Am transatlantic flight from Frankfurt to Detroit via London and New York. The plane was targeted by terrorist activity on 21 December 1988. The aircraft operating the transatlantic leg of the route was destroyed by explosion, killing all 243 passengers and 16 crew, before landing on the small unsuspecting town of Lockerbie, killing the eleven residents below.
