THIS IS NOT ANYMORE WHAT IT SHOULD HAVE REMAINED TO BE
By Manó Dániel Szöllősi and Yoana Buzova
'Good artists copy, great artists steal. – Pablo Picasso'
- 'Rotterdam art thieves take valuable paintings in dawn heist
- Picasso, Gauguin, Matisse, Freud and Monet are among the artists whose works were stolen from Dutch gallery' – The Guardian, Tuesday 16 October 2012 18.27 BST
The projects consist of oil paintings showing the left behind empty spots of the missing, stolen paintings from Kunsthal, Rotterdam in October 2012.
'Art' is still there, because the event itself makes increases its aura, makes is more iconic. This makes it irrelevant what is actually painted. By exhibiting the empty spaces, recursion emerges. Everything is made in china these days, why not art, especially when content does not seek or need authenticity any more.
PRODUCTION
- Reproduce in a studio environment the empty spots (the gallery filled the spots already and they refused to give any information, comment on the incident)
Gray wall, white wall, metal wires, hooks, antique image frames, painting title date and name tags
- Collect and borrow antique frames
- USE FLASH to make it more photorealistic in an absurd way.
- Sending electronically the photos to a Chinese painting reproduction company. The company will produce the oil paintings according to the photographs.
Alternative project versions
- V2 Faker, Fraud
Order reproductions of the original oil paintings from a Chinese oil painting reproduction company. Exhibit the collection.
- V3 Hacktivist output
Order reproductions of the original oil paintings from a Chinese oil painting reproduction company. Put an advertising on 'Marktplaats.nl' and try to sell the reproductions as originals. Contact the police and tell them we own the paintings. Try to make a deal.
