I’m making a one minute video for the pre eye project that depicts the physical sensation of a movement rather than expressing something with that movement. The movement is a "candle" without the support of the arms hands. The person is floating in the air balancing on their neck and shoulder blades. When you’re doing this position it takes a lot of strength, control and balance, in order to achieve this you need to create a sort of lightness, softness and reaching up. Perhaps the feeling of floating in space or falling backwards reaching for the edge.
I want to explore how to depict this contrast of control and letting go.
In the beginning of the video we experience the position from the perspective of the person doing it. The structure of the video will be a buildup with closeups of the body; tension in body; the strength; sound is breathing of the person and the heartbeat. In the end there is a wide shot of the position. For the ending I’m experimenting how to change the perspective form internal to external. We are now seeing the position form an upside view. I’m looking how I can recreate this sensation or feeling of floating and falling with different types of sounds, perhaps wind sounds of wind and or rushing trains.
In contrast to previous work where movement was to portray a subject or feeling, I’m now interested in showing the physical sensation, really seeing the body working and guiding the viewer in this way of looking at movement. In a way using video to direct the viewer where to look, whereas in theater this would only be possible to see if you’re sitting in the first two rows. The medium of video provides a different way of looking at the body. Editing is like making a choreography. With this ‘new way of choreographing’ I want the audience to question what they’re seeing. In the beginning the viewer is confused about what they're seeing, wondering what they're looking at, and then they get the answer.
In relation to other video work, there is both a simple, natural style with minimal elements. The pace and buildup was present there as well. There it was mostly with images, also starting close, not showing the whole body. The ambient sound is a new addition, before I would do everything on music.
This project promises a starting point as to developing a toolbox and language to be able to create the translations of the visions a have for further work. I have gotten in touch with dancers in this new city. I made a first step into sound design and exploring its possibilities. Image is already more familiar, but I got a lot of inspiration from exploring the physical sensation. These concepts will stick around for future development, but maybe in service of a bigger theme, question or statement.
