The more you use QuickType, the smarter it will get as it learns your style of writing and choice of words. The keyboard is wonderfully creepy. It studies your typing patterns across your iPhone and then suggests what words to type next, contextualizing based on whether it’s a text or an email and who you’re messaging with. If you text a certain person a certain way, QuickType should recognize it and adjust its suggestions accordingly. It works in a number of languages other than English.

Describe how you will go about conducting your research through reading, writing and practice. In other words, through a combination of these approaches, you will explore questions or interests you have laid out in your general introduction.  In this section you can help us understand how your project will come together on a practical level and talk about possible outcome(s). Of course, the outcome(s) may change as your research evolves, but it's important to have some idea of how your project might come together as a whole.
I will read about writing machines, turing tests, research how personal the word proposals are.

In addition I will need knowledge about arduino because I think I need a kind of machine that clicks the word-proposals on the smartphone. At the end I think I will have to machines clicking on the word-proposals and after x words on "send"… then the other machine should start. But I don't want the machines to bei in the focus… the outcome should be more important, the messages… don't know how to achieve this at the moment. maybe the outcome is the only visible and the machines aren't… we will see.

What do you want your first project to be?

I want to let two smartphone talk to each other with text messages only by using the word proposals. In iOS 8 Apple introduced QuickType. It is the small bar above your keybord with predictive text in it.

How do you plan to make it?

I will read about writing machines, turing tests, research how personal the word proposals are. In addition I will need knowledge about arduino because I think I need a kind of machine that clicks the word-proposals on the smartphone. At the end I think I will have to machines clicking on the word-proposals and after x words on "send"… then the other machine should start. But I don't want the machines to bei in the focus… the outcome should be more important, the messages… don't know how to achieve this at the moment. maybe the outcome is the only visible and the machines aren't… we will see.

Who can help you and how?

Don't know exactly. Maybe Michael and Aymeric? I really want to put my hands on now to do some tests with Arduino, servo motors, touch screens… ect. I have done a small setup months ago… but it was too simple. I need a robot / machine that can click both on the word proposals and on "sent".

What are you working on now?

At the moment I consider how the machines could look and how I can make another prototype. I built a first prototype to see what I need to toggle a click on the phone. Now I think I have to buy an Arduino and all this stuff…

Relation to previous practice

  • It deals with technology.
  • I take a critical look at these word proposals. Somehow they are personal but the user can't see it and does not know how it works…
  • Hard to say in this early state…

Relation to a larger context

  • Markov chain
  • Shannon and Weaver Model of Communication, Communication Theory

Meaning practices or ideas that go beyond the scope of your personal work. Write briefly about other projects or theoretical material which share an affinity with your project. For example, if you are researching urban interventions, you might want to research about Situationist approaches to psychogeography, urban tactical media and activist strategies of reclaiming the streets. Or, if you want to explore the way data is tracked, you might touch upon the politics of data mining by referencing concerns laid out by the Electronic Frontier or highlight theoretical questions raised by Wendy Chun or others. (Keep in mind that we are *not* expecting well formulated conclusions or persuasive arguments in the proposal phase. At this juncture, it's simply about showing an awareness of a broader context, which you will later build upon as your research progresses.)
