Clay Tabloids
What is it?
A publishing practice that publishes a clay tablet "newspaper". The distribution of said paper should be performed in a ritualistic manner promoting a speculative, archeological and fringe-scientific narrative.
Why make it?
To invite to reflection around media's permanence and media-consumption(social and political mainly(maybe?)), make people responsible for objects that will ideally remain for millennia, as well as inviting to reimagine or speculate around early recorded history.
Workflow
Somehow source material for the paper, probably by asking people about what they would like to share with a public 4000 years in the future. Pen plotting (or some other "efficient means" of "mass"-producing such newspaper).
Rapid prototypes
Asking Thijs: With the stone tablets, you already present a kind of 'alternative' history. You could lean into that by misrepresenting our times.
By making a very thin sheet of clay and sticking it to a piece of paper
the HP7475A was able to plot using a needle attachet to an old pen-plotter-pen
Worlds first ever pen plotted clay tablet
Previous practice
Publishing practices is already something Im exploring…
Relation to a wider context
An opposition to the extremely fast pace consumeristic approach to ICT's in the current big media-landscape.
Choices made
Using clay as an OG storage-midia
Using pen plotter as an obsolete media
Time is very much present in both of these
A public 4000 years in the future makes room for a lot of speculation
Acquiering a rolling pin made it much easier to flatten the clay. Thus more tests were done.
While attempting to plot the demo on clay, as the paper got wet and the clay got dry, things warped. Luckily it was possible to salvage the clay tablet.
ROTTERDAM UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED FRINGE SCIENCES
The connotation of "fringe science" is that the enterprise is rational but is unlikely to produce good results for a variety of reasons, including incomplete or contradictory evidence.
what it is:
The university of applied fringe science is a space that utilizes fringe scientific methods to conduct research.
why it is:
an attempt to interrogate and reimagine educational institutions, and explore questions such as: what can be considered research, Why research, methods for researching…
Workflow:
get aquanted with beareucratic procedures and structures that make up a educational institution. Reach out to other scientific communitites to get insight into what makes science. Apply the fringe scientifc research and publish the findings in some way or another, in line with the fringe scientific tradition this shoouldn ot be done in a conventional manner.
The university probably needs some staff and some students, so maybe ther would be an application process.
Timetable
A table located at the RUAFS with a couple of watches and other time-telling devices.
Rapid prototype:
https://hub.xpub.nl/chopchop/~v/RUAFS/rapid.html
Previous practice:
All my life I though I'd be a scientist, I guess I am in a way. thats why this is a good idea. Also Im interested in speculative design, as a method of exploration of designs role in society.
Relation to a wider context:
I think this rleates to the post-truth media-paradigm, and can also provide forms of instituional critique and question the power of defining knowledge.
Choices made:
At some point I stumbled upon the wikipedia article for "frinege science" which to me sounds like a disciplin within science, and thus should be explored in a scientifc instituion as the RUAS. I think there are some itnersting nuances presented in this article regarding the difference between pseudo and fringe science…
SOCIO-TECHNOLOGICAL PROTOCOL FOR HIDE AND SEEK WITH THE POLICE
What is it?
A collection of instructions which will allow one to engage in the lively and fun activity of hide and seek with the police. The instructions are different prompts which you can call the emergency services and say, in order to get them interested in your whereabouts, then it is up to the player to hide.
Why make it?
To rebalance the power-relation between "authority" and citizen. I think it can be ralted to information hazards: https://nickbostrom.com/information-hazards.pdf
Workflow
Research EMS and police protocols in order to find out what you need to say in order to get them looking for you. then write this down in a presentable format.

Rapid prototype
1. Make yourself to a place you think will make for a for a good location to play hide and seek, ideally a place where you know some good hiding spots.
2. Call the emergency services.
3. Once they pick up you have to choose what difficulty you want to play at. dependant on your choice say the following:
Novice - Hey Im at "your location" and deffinitvely not doing anything suspicious. Then hang up abruptly.
Intermediate - Hey Im about to vandalize this invaluable pice of cultural history at "your location"
Hard - Holy shit I killed them, I killed them?! Then hang up
The pirate way
What is it?
A publication of some sort, either digital or physical, maybe both, that gives insights into approaches on how to pirate certain proprietary software. As in not to be a source of pirated software, but a pointer to were such things can be found, as to not incriminate myself. A sort of self-help guide to pirating software. It should also contain some history and technical info on the ins and out of pirating.
Why make it?
To educate people about pirating, in a world where big ICT companies keeps getting bigger, and having emense power over certain industries relying on such technologies. Maybe it can be framed as a sort of activism.
Workflow
Pirate software, browse the web, download shady files from shady places — sail the sea, and take records of these personal experiences.
Research different ways of pirating Torrents/direct downloads, trackers etc.
Research legislation surrounding pirating.
Research ethical concerns regarding pirating
Time table September: Research pirating through forums and other sources where pirating is happening October-November: Indepth analysis of Pirating, including legislations, ethical concerns, risks December: editorial work to structure a publication January-february: Proto-type and test publicaton March: revise publicaton based on testing april: done
Rapid prototypes
PROLOGUE Proceed with caution, Pirating software is Illigal, and may harm your computer, do not trust unauthorized distributors, this publication is intended for educational purposes only.
A person I know very well, had an incident recently (MacOS only): The not-so-legally acquired software they used for production of multimedia, (mainly text, image and motiongraphics, to give you a rough idea of the kind of software we are talking about) suddenly stopped working. Thus they had to surf the web in order to try to find new versions of these tools. Their approach was to go to reddit on a form specifically dedicated to cracked versions of the software(s) in question. After browsing seemingly endless threads there were some things that stuck out. Apparently the provider of the previous crack they were using, had retired. A russian Hacker group by the name of TNT. Fortunatly a new Russian hacker group was hot in the scene, the Monter-group. the cracks from this group could be sourced on a distributor site, with links to direct downloads. Hesitantly in desperation the subject decided to try their luck with these links, trusting the numerous accounts that proclaimed that "This is what worked for them". This lead to download gigabytes of suspicios files, from russian facebook, which apparantly is a good place to host these dubious files. But, there is a but, the cracks alone are not alone strong enough to withstand big-techs monopolising greed. In short the cracks works somehow by disabling all communication between your personal computer and big-software-monopoly servers. Ofcourse this comes at the cost that a user will not be able to use cloud-based-server-AI services provided by the software, but who would want that anyway? In order to ensure no communication between the two, you have install some additional firewall software. The reason for this is that the built in firewall of MacOS only protects from incoming traffic, and has no possibilitie to block outgoing traffic. Introduce LULU the open source firewall software that allows you to block outgoing software. In addition to this you have to add some IPs to a block list as an extra layer of pretection. Following all the steps, turning on and off the Wifi, not opening the application until the right time, trusting the strangers online, the person I know very well was able to get hold on the software they have been conditioned to be addicted to, and even got the hottest newst versions.
Previous practice
I am graphic designer concerned with ownership over means of production, I am also a computer enthusiast and nostalgic that remember the rewarding feeling of beeing able to play the game that your parents wouldnt buy you, all for free!
Relation to a wider context
A form of resistance towards the big tech companies that own the digital infrastructure that permeates life in the 21st century.
Choices made
As these are muddy waters it is useful to use a second voice to tell the stories about piracy as to not incriminate myself.
To the moon!
'What is it?
It is a project where I become a day trader, trading on the free markets. maybe it can be understood as a performance.
Why make it?
to become rich and retire, and demystify the magical aura of deceptive terms that surrounds the financial world.
Workflow
Research day trading, trade daily, become rich.
