notes about my family history
(information collected through email correspondence with my grandfather / his genealogical bookwork about our family tree / a genealogical bookwork made by one of his brothers):
My grandfather's grandfather was a Dutchman called Jacobus Carolus (van Bochove) who moved to Suriname around the 1880s (?).
There isn't a lot known of him.
He was born in 1866, he moved to Suriname at a young age (he had his first child at the age of 23 in 1889 (my grandfather's father)) and he was a military man.
Both his parents died shortly after each other, at a young age (around their mid-thirties) allegedly from a cholera epidemic.
It is speculated that his military profession and the fact that he became an orphan had something to do with him migrating to Suriname.
He had four younger siblings of whom three died within their first year of life.
The story of how he met Suzanna Francoise Maria van Zorgen (his wife (my grandfather's grandmother) is also not known. Suzanna is a descendant of an enslaved woman called Kaatje van Fonseca. Suzanna's father was an enslaved child (manumitted at the age of 8), his mother is Kaatjes daughter Klaartje (manumitted at the age of 28). (1842)
When asking my grandfather about the story of how they met he replied to me: "They never told me the story of how they fell in love with each other. Back then, it was considered inappropriate to ask such things."
Koos (my grandfather's father) married a woman named Jeane and together they had 8 children. My grandfather was born seventh and is the only one left living.
