Question

the purple is associated with royalty for a simple reason that, until relatively recently in our history, it was an extremely expensive dye and only royalty could afford it.

However, till now, purple has the same meaning and mood : luxury. I am wondering if there were no such history, would we still think purple as a luxury color?

Why I like purple

Since my childhood, purple always has been my favorite color. To think of the reason why I like purple, it is simply because of a stupid psychology test when I took with my friends for fun. The result was that purple is the color for princess, and as a young me happy being a princess, started to state that purple is my favorite color. In addition, after certain time, I heard that purple represents artists. Of course, since then I started to collect all kinds of purple items. So do I like purple because of its artificial image? Yes, I started like purple because of those created meaning. But this does not mean that I don’t like the color. I just admit that I started to like the color because of its created meanings. If back then, another color, such as black, represented princess, that certain color would have been my favorited color.

Royalty

The first purple, known as Tyrian Purple, was made from the mucous of sea snails. It required vast quantities of snails to create the smallest amounts of dye – up to 250,000 snails produced just one ounce. Even worse, the vats used to produce it had to be situated on the outskirts of Tyre (in what is today Lebanon) due to the dreadful smell that the process produced.
