Sound will be recorded of the participants footsteps. I want to test two settings. One where the participants are wearing shoes and one where the only walk on socks. The sound functions as a guidance/support of the video, but should never overtake the feeling of the scene. The sound is thus very minimal. For this I want to ask the participants to shut of their phones and to make sure that no objects that can produce sounds are in their pockets.

NOTES Brainstorm

  • 4:3 format
  • Level 1: Media Event ("racist" comment from Dutch jury member to Chinese contestant) ---> Level 2: Video vader koken ---> Level 3: Video me koken met silicone ---> Level 4: Fotoserie, Mukbang, Sculpturen etc.
  • Shots: overview and detail (washing, cooking)
  • Eat, Drink, Man, Woman
  • Racist (issue) vs. Genes (overdracht)
  • Adopting the issue; from negative (afzetten, tegenin, statement maken) to positive (posters, mokken, het vereeuwigen/aanbidden/omarmen).
  • Vader Chinees, ik Nederlands
  • Overerving: uiterlijk/talenten/ziektes vs. cultuur (bv. taal).
  • GENEREREN VAN EIGEN TAAL - Hoe?
Vooroordelen/stereotypering.
  • Passing on knowledge ---> Food is metaphor.

CONCEPT: Chapters to form a story

The work I want to make consists of a series of different video works called 'Chapters #'. Each chapter is connected to the previous and next chapter, however the chapters are not necessary lineair. The basis is a work around my dad. He used to be a chef and together with my mother he owned a Chinese restaurant called Choi Sing in The Hague. For this work I asked him to cook again in a Chinese restaurant. The dish he is going to cook is called 'Nr. 39 with Rice'. From this video on I create more video works connecting and reflecting to the first one, Chapter 1.

Next to the video works I want to create a line of physical sculptures that look like food. The first sculpture is a direct result from the dish my father is cooking. The others come from Chinese restaurants that serve a Nr. 39-dish.

STORYBOARD

Chapter 1: Cooking Nr. 39 by my father

My father return to his former profession that of a chef. He cooks a dish from begin to end, from washing and cutting to cooking and serving the dish. The dish he is going to cook is a Nr. 39-dish. The film is a fine interlude between overview shots (wider angle) and detailshots. The detailshots consists of close-up of the action (e.g. cutting or washing) and close-ups of my father (e.g. face). Several detailshots of the kitchen and its equipment are introduced to give the kitchen an identity. The end scene is where my father decorates the plate and placed it on the table. Just hands placing the dish on the table is visible, no face. Benjamin then takes the dish from the other side of the table out of the shot (helicopter position). Classical music is placed underneath the video and supports the video (Verdi)

We will use 2 DSLR-Nikon camera's; one for the detailshots, the other for the overview shots. They are stationary placed. Kitchen sounds will also be recorded.

Dish:

A colorfull dish with lots of vegetables and beef, all stir fried.

  • Pods (peulen)
  • Carrots
  • Baby corn
  • (Chinese) mushrooms
  • Sliced beef

  • Working cloths+hat dad(?), apron (schort)
  • Plate
  • old radio/ghettoblaster
  • Lucky cat
  • Old picture of father and mother in restaurant (choi sing)
  • Cutting carrots picture book

Chapter 2: Reproduction of dish Nr. 39

Benjamin is going to replicate the dish from his father using silicone material. He places the dish he received from his father on the table in front of him (overview shot). He carefully takes apart every piece of the dish and placed this in front of him on the table. He covers slowly every piece of the dish in silicone. When the silicone is harden out, he carefully take out the food from its mold and prepares the mold for the copy-making process which includes cleaning and greasing the molds before again silicone goes on. When the positives are ready he takes them out. Now the painting starts. The idea is to give every piece the color of its real equivalent. The video ends when Benjamin finished the reproduction and places it on the table in front of him (helicopter view).

This video is again an interlude between detailshots (cleaning, painting e.g.) and overview shot (e.g. receiving of the dish). Because the harding out of silicone takes 24 hours, the shootings is spread over multiple days. Short black cuts are needed in the edit. Sound of the process are recorded and placed underneath the video.

Chapter 3: Cutting a Carrot and folding it in a Rose

The video shows the hands of my father cutting a carrot into thin sheets, then folding them into a carrot rose. The face of my father won't be or get visible, the video is just a close up of the hand movements when folding the carrots into the rose. The rose is at the end of the video presented on a plate or hand. The video is taken in a black space. The light is very important in this video and must be warm and coming from the left side, leaving a strong shadow side on the right side of my father's hand.

accessories:

  • (big) carrot
  • Knife
  • Head bulb and filters (Otto)
Carved carrots

Chapter 4: Transfer of a dish mediated by hands (work title)

Chapter four shows the transfer of Nr.39 to another plate mediated by hands. For this video I need 4/5 men and 5/6 females and both of my parents. I will use 3 cameras, 2 sound recording sets and 3 red head lights. Camera 1 is pointed towards the hands of my parents. The left hand of my father and the right hand of my mother will form a bowl. Camera 1 shows a close up from the front of the hands and mid-body of my father. You see appearing one by one pieces of food placed my hands of different men (size, color, appearance). This piece of food is then taken out of the image one by one by hands of different females (size, color, appearance). This ritual is repeated until there is no food to be transferred.

Camera 2 is pointed towards the Nr.39-dish (with the food). Hands of different men (size, color, appearance) take out pieces of food one by one and place it into the hands of my parents. Camera 2 shows a close up of the dish and slowly you see the dish (or food) disappearing out of the image by numerous hands until there is not a piece of the food left on the plate. The last item to be taken from the plate is a carved rose.

Camera 3 is pointed towards an empty plate that serves as the new plate for the new Nr.39-dish. This version of Nr.39 is compiled by the hands of different females. Camera 3 shows hands coming in with a piece of food and placing it on the plate. This ritual ends with the placing of the last piece, which is the carved rose.

Set & Choreography:

The set of the chapter is as followed. Left and right of my parents is placed a table. The tables and my parents are in the same line. On the left table you see the Nr.39-dish and on the right table you see an empty plate. The participants are divided by gender into two groups. The men gather behind the table with the Nr.39-dish, the women gather behind the table with the empty plate. The members of the two groups are given a number. This number stands for the order they either have to take a piece of the food or place it on the empty plate. After placing either the food in the hand of my parents or taking it out, the participant needs to que again in the line. The two groups have to walk in a circle. The timing of placing and taking the food needs to be slow. No two hands are appreciated in the image, this needs to be tested on the spot.

Sound will be recorded of the participants footsteps. I want to test two settings. One where the participants are wearing shoes and one where the only walk on socks. The sound functions as a guidance/support of the video, but should never overtake the feeling of the scene. The sound is thus very minimal. For this I want to ask the participants to shut of their phones and to make sure that no objects that can produce sounds are in their pockets.

accessories & equipment:

  • 3 DLSR FX-cameras, 3 tripods, 3 red head lights, 3 light stands, 2 sound recording sets, 2 tables, 2 plates, food, skirt (father).

Ideas for Chapters

  • Last Supper with my family
To serve my family and eat with them Chinese food. Before the feast we play an old Dutch game "stoelendans".
