NOTES -> OBJECT

HEIDEGGER 'THE THING'
Phenomenologist??
Relation between what is perceived and what is really only experience within containing framework visually, tactility and temporality
‘handmade ceramic jug’
object – fiction and form , made of a particular material (fired earth)
constituted by the void inside it. (jug shaped the void and is also shaped by it)
approaching it through the nothing
meeting of absence and presence prior to other relations to object
(distances in time and space are shrinking)
(season changes on film instead of hidden)
abolition of every possibility of remoteness
greatest distances behind man is shortest time, everything before himself at the shortest range
Though this brings no nearness
Uniformity in which everything without distance
Only seeing results – not the way before it on the triggers
The terrifying us unsettling, it places everything outside its own nature
All conquest of distances the nearness of things remains absent
We success in reaching it rather by attending what is near
Self-sustained self supporting independent -> becomes object if places in front of us, in presence or mind
Thingly character of thing does not consist in its being a represented object, nor can it be defined in any way in terms of objectness, the over-againstness, of the object????
Vessel remained (mind or presence has no influence)
By virtue of what the jug consists of, it too can stand on the earth (made of earth) either immediately or through mediation -> self-supporting -> thingness
Object – mere act of representation?
Making process /self support?
(Over-againstness??)
The jug is not a Bessel because it was made, the jug had to be made because it is this holding vessel
That which is in the jugs nature is its own never brought about by its making
During making process the Jug shows outward appearance. The aspect, the idea, characterizes the jug in the respect in which the vessel stands over against the maker as something to be made
(plato- conceives of what is present in terms of outward appearance) experiences everything present as an object of making
object (instead of before, opposite) ‘what stands forth’ > stemming from somewhere, into the unconcealedness of what already present
the jugs thingness resides in its being que vessel
when we fill the jug we become aware of the holding nature, but there are imoermeable parts of that thingness the empty space, this nothing of the jug, is what the jug is as a holding vessel
the vessels thingness does not lie at all in the material of which it consists, but in the void that holds
proximity of the space to the object
switch from transport to media
timelapse
does not need anything to be
thing is together – sculpture – thing becomes object in front of us
object defines itself in its use – requires a subject
something close does not necessarily become intimate
something seems less remote because of media / we can keep things at a distance
traveling somewhere / looking at same time at something on television> shortcuts
tele = transport
world becomes smaller
approaching knowledge
the figurativeness of the object – object is derived/independent – the thing is independent
define ‘chain’ as things -> don’t look at all the representations
what is it not? -> negative is positive -> gives emptiness a form – makes it a thing
prove something / prove the reversal
definition of the thing is not the object
thing are relation to environment
THE THING - GARCIA / AND LATOUR NOTES ->
Antroposcene – entering new phase where systems that make the earth are influences by humans (thinking in networks)
Sociology (opinion parts) statistics -> starting, society -> the organization of people, together in communities -> social dynamics
Objects as actors (count people and things) – equally different actors in the networks
Aristotel -> we wouldn’t need slaves if we had automation -> now machines, then humans -> have same function
Antropos – human/scene – era
Smartphone not system – the smartphone -> users -> nsa -> everything connected = system
Cybernetics = feedback between machines and humans -> actor networks
Feedback – terugkoppelen (cybernetics 1960’s)
Speculative realism ->thinking about what is there (ontology) -> everything is an object, even what is not
Heidegger – holy grail – no / Garcia – holy grail – yes
Garcia- things compose of/ latour – what do relations compose
We can no longer just think about us, we have to think about us and the world – cannot be (antropesentric) -> think about humans/not things
Page 35 of (the thing/Garcia) as trajectory for encyclopedia
Latour – making things humans/Garcia – making humans things
COLLECTING- selfies me/wifi signal info graphics
Thing -> sculptural / autonomous / not specified -> colloquial (alledaags) -> intimacy??
Object->functional / part of the system/ part of the flow / definable/interpretation -> technical -> distance??
THING – object ??
Things –
Encountered – not encountered
Anything – every word that exists and more
Tangible – intangible / visible - invisible / audible – inaudible
Subjective - objective
Divided – undivided
Objects –
Interaction?
Function?
Value?
Correlated to subject
(Through encountered/interaction)
(an object be a subject? Even without correlation?)
