INTRO
With the information of the response a complex sculpture is created to visualize the details of the audio response. In our society we are constantly searching for the newest, fasted and perhaps prettiest way of using and designing new technology. By making things thinner, faster and more beautiful we discard our “old” technology faster. A mobile phone has an average life of 2 years and we are focussed on getting a better model after these years. What about old technologies? Are we skipping ahead to fast and are we forgetting these technologies? This research is there to create a toolset to re-implement old technologies in modern society. Can old communication devices help us in creating a safer and unsupervised communication network? How much energy do we safe by using old technology to fulfil our daily needs? Can we recycle old devices into functionally nature friendly objects?

There are a lot of subjects to research but this proposal is made to show some of these examples so the reader has a toolset to find their own implementations of old technology.
These pictures and one sculpture will be presented at the exhibition. The pictures will be framed and put on a wall with description of the process. One sculpture will be made with the impulse response of the exhibition room. The pictures and sculpture are there to represent the unseen visual character of the acoustics of that place.<br>

Introduction (synopsis):
In 1982 The Roland Corporation made a bass guitar simulation synth, the tb-303. The machine sparked an unpredicted wave of music and has a long history of being used / misused and reinvented. Within the evolution of the machine towards the current status in 2014 with the official release of a new version by Roland, the tb-303 has been the focal point of big following in the electronic music scene. It is important to understand what kind of influences the machine has and has had within this period. So this essay is dedicated to the history and future of the machine. With examples of how the machine was used / copied / emulated and involved in current music environments, the wiki will show an in depth story about the machine and its history future.

RESEARCH

Revision as of 12:40, 5 November 2014

The project is about visualization acoustics in various spaces. The idea is that an impulse response is played and recorded in a space. An impulse response is a method to calculate the reverb of a certain space. Trough the playback and recording of frequencies ranging from 0hz to 50kHz the resonating properties and thus the reverberant character of the space is calculated.

The professional use of this type of measuring normally results in a waterfall like diagram. With this project I’m aiming at a more natural way of representing the space. The sound originates from the centre of the room and the reflections are measured in every direction. This results in an explosion like sculpture.

With the information of the response a complex sculpture is created to visualize the details of the audio response. The sculpture will be calculated and constructed in a 3d object by a computer and 3d printed or cnc ed out of Styrofoam. The sculpture is then put back in the space as it was floating death centre of the space, and a picture is taken.

These pictures and one sculpture will be presented at the exhibition. The pictures will be framed and put on a wall with description of the process. One sculpture will be made with the impulse response of the exhibition room. The pictures and sculpture are there to represent the unseen visual character of the acoustics of that place.

Depending on the size of the room where the impulse response is taken, the size of the sculpture may be different. Bigger rooms have a larger reverb so the sculpture is bigger. I’m aiming at impulse responses from common rooms, toilets, bathrooms, classrooms and larger places like churches or halls.

Depending of the size of the sculpture the sculpture is either 3d printed or cnc’ed out of Styrofoam. To enhance the visualisation and to obscure any blemishes that occur during the process a coating of paint is applied.

The viewer will first see the object floating mid-air in the exhibition space. And see the pictures on the wall of similar sculptures, by reading the explanation of the project it should come clear why the sculptures are made and what they represent.
