user profile
A user profile is a collection of settings and metadata associated with a specific user and this user's specific customized environment. It is a digital representation of one's identity and its ensures authentication , permissions, rights, and maintainance of personal preferences. It differs from a user account, beeing a more public expression of it. User accounts can contain different user profiles.1

User profiles are linguistic constructions, which occur in extra linguistic structures, from the code in the websites we use to computers as linguistic devices, and have the database as a design model. This involves designing fixed structures and categories from the system ,participation and personal data contribution for the user. But what can the database say about the person? According to Mark Poster, because of its structure it manipulated symbols to form a picture of the individual. This illustrates how an identity is formed within a user profile: through language.2
Important part in the concept of user profiles play the protocolls and regulations that govern the process of their creation. In order to register in Facebook for example , to become a user of it, one has to agree with 2 policies, in my Space with 3 policies etc. +++
metadata we submit/categories+ " Why do I need to provide my birthday?"
Profile is a linguistic contsruction that mediates a social construction: one;s identity. By providing a very controled space and using controled vocabulary puts the individual in the position to enter data in the database that will regenerate the persons identity in the context of that system. Assigns also this identity with specific regulations , duties and rights predetermined, therefore mediates power relations and control.

If we follow Olga Goriunova's concept about a user as producer of himself, of own individuality we can think about user profiles that mediate a self-production of the self and the others though symbols and communication.
