Thematic Project – The Creative Industry
A day filled with idea's that need (financial)support so they can be launched. The goal of the day is attracting and teaching people about the concept and usage of these prototypes.
The event could be organised in such a way that there will be individual presentations about the work throughout the day. This means we could work with a time schedule, where every projects get's a certain amount of time to be spoken and discussed about.
Certain existing models can be found that are dealing with or have dealt with the launch of new prototypes or ideas. TED talks are hosted in many cities throughout the world and this model could be used to design our own "PZI Talk". The several projects that will be shown have a thing in common as they all in one way or another embody a creative industry.
So with ' The Creative Industry' as a theme for the exhibition, I want to create a visual identity for the whole show. How can I bring all these projects together under one wing? The projects should be shown within a bigger context, in this case the fictional host of the day has invited the participants to show their work. How can this host be created and identified? There are several ways to bind together all the participants: The design of name tags, posters/flyers announcing the event, stands where the participants can explain their work, slogans and motivational words that describe the show (example: "Ideas worth spreading" by TEDtalks), teasers of the event.
There was a show on Dutch television called "Het beste idee van Nederland" this translates as: "The best idea of The Netherlands", although the structure of the show is mostly based around the verdict of a jury, which shouldn't happen in our event, the presentation of the various projects was quite interesting and felt very personal, this is something we can work with. There are many fairs hosted throughout the world that are showing a certain kind of product. In this sense the product can be a physical thing, for example: cars, toys, photographs, books, mobile homes, clothing, food and beverage etc., or it can be something non-physical, like a touristic destination, a job, the idea for a product etc. I think that our show will be something in-between, almost a celebration of the idea itself, not necessary the final product (although it is proposed and the prototype is there).
For our show it would be a good idea to also think about who you are? Are you a company? What kind of name will your company have and how will you present yourself at the fair.
Some questions:
- What will be the name of the event?
- How would you define your project?
- What is the name of your project/prototype?
- As you are launching your work under a fictional company, what is the name of your company?
- Would you like to present your work during the show (with a talk, video, presentation etc.)?
We will present our idea's! Come and see our wonderful machinery! This is our creative industry!
Ideas and notations #2
After the group tutorial we came up with alot of different names. In the end we settled with stARTup camp, solutions for the new creative economy. The name of the event explains the projects that will be shown, as they are artistic installation/ideas within the structure of a company or commercial presentation of the object.

The day will be organised in such a way that at the beginning of the day all the projects will be 'launched' and can be discussed or presented if the designers intend to do so. In the evening a Pecha Kucha presentation will be held, where every group presents his/her project with a talk and a slide of images.
Another possible way to give structure to the event is to divide the group into clusters, which will group similar projects together. Tags can be created for the projects and also on the exhibition (or, launch party) the projects can be placed next to each other to have a better overview.
Ideas and notations #3
Notes on stARTup camp projects.
Niek: Educational Avant-garde: School module for teaching avant-garde music. Try to intercept the basic listening module, and implement that with a sense of avantgarde from the start. The only people that can produce original avant-garde are little children! The main presentation will be a module handbook, which will be marketed at the fair.
Nan: The Human Instagram Filter Building a service. Nan will generate custom made artistic pictures. Audiovisual ones, or real time audio performances. The data will be handed in, and she will create an artistic result out of your own pictures or work. This can be a performance at the event, which is heavily based on time. Can it be done at the event? Nan will show a prototype at the event, in which the data has already be processed. It will be a service that has to be paid for. A 20 minute work will be way less edited as a work that has been worked on for a longer period. What will be the interaction with the people? This work will question the value of creative labor.
Marlon and Lasse: Will create two videos. Based on a traditional crowd-sourced platform. The other video will appeal to the designers, which will have a very heavy gamification element. Together with other designers, as if in a MMOG you can join guilds or teams to create solutions for the master. Footage of the typical crowd-sourcing website will be used or juxtaposed to portray these websites in their typical way of working.
Matthias: Paid Vandalism for advertisement.
Yoana: Industrializing DIY. (Diyify) It will be done at the event itself. Nan and Yoana have quite similar projects, however, the product of Yoana’s work will be a product of DIY, while that of Nan will be that of a human machine, or human script. Contemporary Alchemy, everything can be turned into DIY. What are you buying when you buy a DIY object? What is the value, Yoana mentions that it could be the hype surrounding it.
Planning, branding, visual identity.
TITLE: stARTup camp Creative Business Ideas
The groups will be categorised in clusters, until now we have not come up with names for the different groups yet. Preferably these groups will also be colour coded, to quickly find an overview in the space. Each group will name their company, create a logotype and name their project. A short description of this project will be used for advertisement.
Clusters will include:
Group 1: Future creators
- Niek
- Michaela, Nicole
- Marlon, Lasse
Group 2: Customizing
- Yoana
- Nan
Group 3: Crowds
- Roel
- Joseph
- Matthijs
Group 4: Non-traditional business models
- Matthias
Concept for the poster, website, flyers (or postcards), mailinglist, facebook page. Nametags, printed tape, colour codes for the different groups. Map of the exhibition Summary of the event.

Ideas and sketches #4
Some more ideas for the nametags and the invite. Preferably the invite could also be a postcard as flyers are often ignored or thrown away very quickly. The postcard could also serve as a digital invite. With these sketches I already tried a little bit to use colouring as we might use this for dividing the group into their own specific cluster(see above).
Ideas and sketches #5
New sketches for the identity. After last talks feedback we came to the conclusion that it was too designed and the sketches before looked much like the invite for a graphic design fare. I should look more into the business launch aesthetics, web 2.0 and a less designed approach overall. This is quite hard to do as already picking web 2.0 colours gives it a very designed look. Here are some of the new ideas including some of the logo's that everyone has been sending in.
