Log

Week -1: winter break

Goals I want to keep in mind this trimester:

Keep taking notes. Halfway through SI28 I got so busy I forgot to update my wiki and I think a lot of my detailed thoughts were lost because of that.. So I want to stay on track during this SI.
Be intentional with my time and create balance. Don't overfill my schedule. Create intentional spaces for self-care + being social.
Find the joy in my practice. Have fun and don't put too much pressure on myself. I feel a bit lost in what I enjoy doing/making exactly. I'd like to return to drawing again.

Week 0: snow!!!

Snow at Utrecht Overvecht station in the early morning!

Websites

Doriane showed us her personal website which made me reflect a lot on my own neocities website which I put so much effort in setting up but hasn't been updated for like.. a year.
Her philosophy behind website-making as not a finished product but a constant growing and creating process feels like exactly the way of thinking I was missing. I focus so much on making a website look pretty that adding more content that doesn't fit the structure would mean having to redesign it all over again.
I feel very inspired by her website structure where she can keep adding anything she wants without having to fit it into a set of categories. I think something like that would work a lot better for me too.

HowSpots

I loooove everything about HowSpots! What an amazing idea. It immediately made me want to host something like this for my friends.. I wish I had the space for it myself, but maybe I can ask around if someone else could host. Doriane's motivations behind creating the HowSpots reminded me a lot of a recent People Make Games video about the Microsoft/XBOX boycott. Should rewatch that especially in prep for the datacenter topic in a few weeks.

P2P and SoulSeek

After getting a detailed explanation of how P2P works and what SoulSeek is I spent the evening exploring the application for some music!! It reminded me a lot of how I used to download music from YouTube to my first smartphone's SD card. My iPod library feels a little more fleshed out now with my fav music I couldn't find through CD/bandcamp :) and I uploaded some of my ripped CD's in return!

Self-employment and self-hosting

I registered my self-employment at the Kamer van Koophandel on Tuesday!! I've been putting it off due to life-reasons for like a year, and the weekend after new years I decided to make an appointment and it felt really good to take that initiative. Starting a business also triggered a deep dive into self-hosting as I became interested in hosting my own website, and owning my own domain and e-mail. I've been very torn on if I want to rent a VPS or buy a raspberry pi and homebrew the server.. I'm leaning towards the former but I don't like having to pay ANOTHER subscription. To be continued..

Laptop SSD Maintenance & Dual Booting Linux

I finally dual booted Linux onto my laptop :) it was quite nervewracking but everything went super smoothly (mostly) in the end! You can read my detailed process on the wiki page linked above.

Global Game Jam 2026

During the weekend I participated in GGJ2026 together with Dion and Max! The theme was "mask" and we made Suncatcher, a little interactive narrative game set in a cyberpunk city. You have to use objects to create a mask that will trick facial detection software from an evil AI company to ultimately go on a mission to set fire to their datacenter. This was inspired by Remco's tour and how much he emphasized the fire detection system was the most important in the entire facility (lol) and also by the concept of Computer Vision Dazzle.
