- Fermentation: umbrella term for chemical processes that involve microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, yeasts); conversion of carbohydrates to alcohol or organic acids
- Pickling: can be fermentation (anaerobic fermentation in salt water), or not (immersion in vinegar)
- Zymology: science of fermentation
