In the course of the last months, as I was trying to imagine what my final work would be about, I have tried inhabiting the mental space of someone else. In my search not so much for an ideal, but rather for a personal way to address present concerns that have become as of late an integral part of my relation with what surrounds me, I have chosen to look for a similar sense of uncertainty from what I believed I am experiencing in other quarters, and tried to do this in what I see as a freeform, intuitive manner. The result, which is not yet fully complete, is a short film that combines imagery of natural environments with a voice over narrating in matter-of-fact terms a story about mortality in an epistolary form.

The work in question has a loose connection to the letters from the war which the painter Franz Marc wrote to his wife during the years he was at the front in France during the Great War (1914-16). As a member of the expressionist movement the Blaue Reiter, Marc, even without believing at all in the pragmatic reasons behind the war or the nationalistic claims made by the various parties involved, at the same time welcomed it as a potential cleansing force that would sweep across Europe and overturn entrenched powers, to bring about a new spiritual era.

It’s therefore the mind of the painter, with its contradictory statements. The sense of uncertainty that is coiling through the words of the painter,.

As a visitor to last year’s graduation show, looking at what was presented by other graduates, I had occasion to reframe some expectations on my own work in relation to the context of the graduation presentation itself. I believe it was a crucial stage for me to approach the issue. I am willing to work on a multimedia project that will be able to incorporate verbal and visual elements, and the visual side I am envisioning is supposed to work rather as a compound of different elements establishing a dialogue with one another than as a monolithic statement in a congealed form.

With the work Universal Time last year I already attempted working within the idea of a modular project that would be possible to expand in multiple directions at once, with each module being independent and yet related to the rest. But I see also the necessity of striving for simplicity and, to an extent, directness, which is a quality that sometimes I find myself struggling with. My goal will therefore be one of maintaining a degree of openness in scope and complexity without however relying on unnecessary over-complication. The search for a form, or forms, in which to develop the work will therefore be a research in itself, one I n which I will have to find the right balance between formal expression and its content.
