The aesthetics of scanning
It’s like a picture but taken much slower. One scan may take up to 1 minute depending on the resolution. The matter to be scanned lays flat on the surface. This provides a nice interface for paper and books, that have information gathered on a two-dimensional space. The depth of focus is really small. If the scanned object is being lifted up just a little bit, it gets blurry.
