"capital kinda has all the money"
internet > incompatible with capitalism?
star network > going through the central node mesh network > users can communicate directly with each other
internet has been funded by capital
thimbl.net -> decentralized micro-blogging using the 'finger' function
deadswap.net -> physical USB stick to pass around
attention economy : dallas smythe : audience commodity the commidity is the audience, not the actual media (i.e. the tv program is free, but the audience is what is being sold) behavior control is what is being sold to the tv programmers
reputation economy : reputation is an extension of social capital capitalism : mode of production -> people who have to sell their labor because they don't own any of the modes of production (they cannot produce) the employees don't own what they make -> you can't set the price of it -> so you can't create a free culture -> the institutions own the products -> they have to change in order to create a free culture
how is value created, how is it propagated - how can we produce things when capital won't fund it?
free culture movement - much older than free software, etc. ex ; dadaists were against the commodifying of arts free software exists - but free software is capital - ex : apache web server is free, and so companies will make hosting companies with it
diaspora VS facebook -> one has money and the other hasn't diaspora is trying to emulate facebook, but has no money like FB has
social media platforms : they are not really democratic -> all voices are not equal. the people with the most social capital to start with are more likely to be heard
marcel mass : book : 'the gift' gift economy : reciprocity is measured at the level of relationships, not money when relationships are weak, then capital economy works better
money is as old as writing -> used to pay a tribute, a % of what you made
