to posit ends and procure and utilize the means to them is a human activity. Technology is a contrivance, an instrumentum.

this is valid for older and modern technology so it conditions every attempt to bring man into the right relation to technology. Everything depends on how we use technology in the right way as a means. 'get technology spiritually in hand', to master technology as the more urgent against being controlled by technology. The instrumental definition is correct because shows what you have in front of you, but only an uncovering reveal the essence, the true.
