WHAT 3. STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE Cartography

STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE Cartography comprised three parts: a wearable object, a performance, and a video titled Walk to Watertown. The wearable object consisted of two connected dresses constructed from a bolt of white drapery fabric. The dresses were worn on a performed walk along the Charles River from Harvard Square to Watertown. The connecting fabric dragged on the ground, picking up dirt and debris to index the journey. Afterwards, the dresses were displayed on two hangers hung eight feet apart on a wall. A twenty-two minute video reconstructed and condensed the walk around the natural transition in the visual environment. The documentation followed the two performers, their environment, and passersby along their plot from the sunny banks of the river to an increasingly monotonous road until the two entered Friendly’s. The video was displayed on a television monitor in a separate space from that where the two dresses were displayed.
