Steve's notes on group discussion
[Steve’s general notes from the discussion at end of session (very partial) 15-12-16:]
Kate: How do the writing and making relate to each other?
Dan: I have a clearer sense of the writing as an ongoing project- this has provided a stability…
Angelica: I feel the opposite I feel I need to sit down and write on a regular basis.
Anni: In my making I feel it’s more OK to be unclear about [the underlying themes of the work] […] there is a different relation with writing […] Dan: I always think you have strong themes.
Kate: This may relate to Anni’s chosen form... the speech
Tor: I find the making and writing are intertwined; I feel it’s been helpful for the making, there is a different materiality to text and objects. The time and pressure on the text [in the context of the course] is very helpful.
Eo: have been trying to write about making, the diary as a framework for allowing other things to enter...
Tor: Ashby - words, fire and paper… I discussed with Will [Holder] when these rhythms feed back through each other, destroy and form each other… [the process is] very interesting and very frustrating.
Ash: the difference in volume, I expect to do many more words than eight thousand; with artwork I can’t visualize this in the same way. It takes doing it to do something good with writing.
[…]
Eo: I find writing is less physical, I find this less rewarding; printing it out helps…
Dan: making posters and playing with type can help also…
Eo: I noticed it is difficult for people to answer the question about who we are addressing.
[…] On the future
Kate outlines stages one goes through during the process of writing, including the difference between:
Structural edit = looking at text as a material with a volume… vital part in the making and
Line edit = Sentence by sentence, asking what does each sentence do? Is the text telling me what I want it to? This is good to do with someone else…
