Critical Practices Seminar with Danny Giles
Decolonial Aesthesis
The art world and academia are experiencing an increased interest in “decolonization”, but what does this look like in practice? How do we unlearn colonial perspectives and practice decoloniality? Decolonial perspectives of theorists and practitioners have long offered critiques of the edifice of Western culture by addressing oppressive structures and philosophies and by advocating for broader terms for inclusion of historically excluded and disregarded communities. Decolonial aesthesis is a term originating in the work of critical theorists from Latin America that asserts that we must interrogate how modernity and coloniality have structured and defined the world to the exclusion of other forms of sensing and being. This series of sessions will unpack concepts and frameworks of coloniality, modernity, and decolonial aesthesis as elucidated by Rolando Vasquez in his recent essay “Vistas of Modernity: Decolonial Aesthesis and the End of the Contemporary.” The essay builds on decolonial knowledge and practice and offers a guide for engaging decolonial aesthesis as a method for liberating our pedagogies and embodiments. In each session we will work our way through portions of the text which will be complemented by film screenings, excursions, and finally a guest visit from Rolando Vasqez.
