Yana's second proposal for a ptmomnbm

From XPUB & Lens-Based wiki

What is it?

For this project, I want to find a way to display a message on the urinal screens present in the WdKA toilets. I want to deliver a message about the protest happening on the Erasmus campus next Thursday regarding the ongoing genocide in Palestine. The screens will display an infographic about the protest’s time and location as well as information about the importance of students joining as exemplified in numerous student actions/encampments around the world.

Why make it?

Through this project, I want to reach a wider audience and give purpose to the meaningless urinal screens. Moreover, I want to gain knowledge in disruptive actions. “It is a mark of solid education — so the teaching quality exists — when, in spite of the institutional framework, in spite of spinelessness, one grows a sturdy stance and decides to stand up for ethical treatment and having a political voice.”

From the urinals website: each urinal “receives above-average attention and is therefore the ideal means for a subliminal message.”

Workflow

I am still not sure how to undertake this operation. I will have to learn more about the technology. Perhaps I will first contact someone from XPUB in hopes they have more knowledge about connecting to screens through WiFi networks.

Previous practice (feel free to use material from your text on practice)

There’s not really an analogue to such an action in my previous practice. I have always been interested in having a social/political element to my work, but I haven’t taken part in disruptive actions. So far, it is also outlined as a technical/network project rather than a lens-based, image one, so this is another difference.

Relation to a wider context Through this action, I want to take part in the wider context of student protests happening around the world. Perhaps it can artistically play with the idea of Duchamp’s ready-mades. https://theofficeofalinalupu.com/printed-matter/the-palestinian-conflict-rippling-across-dutch-art-educational-institutions/ Train stations/malls in NL announcing to visitors brands/gov complicity in genocide
