It's time

Today is 1-10-2025.

User:Sevgi/Special Issue 27/PMOMMs

Session 1 - 07-14.04

Here are my initial notes from the first class with Martino and Imane..

lathe of heaven - if dreams affect reality, they change real life, then they are real. (“You don't speak of dreams as unreal. They exist. They leave a mark behind them.” )

extravictism , mining

singing out technologies that harm the environement, Boycott?

what would I be if I was a clock?

me as a clock

how do you perceive time, where do you place yourself in time, how do you perceive a year, how do you look at the past year, how does the year change as you look back?

grasping at time with devices

- where is the material that keeps the time is stored?

-secret life of machines

-repairing sth that was never designed to be repaired

https://newmaterialism.eu/almanac/i/intra-action.html

a throbber is an indicator of a distruption of flow/stream. the language we define these operations is operatively wrong but it is a human way of defining something mysterious. The process is then can be looked at closer and the interruption defines a moment in time; now. Now shows us that there is a sequence of things instead of a stream. There is nothing simultaneous going on in the core.

Foucault's version of "disruption" is another mode of organising society as in prisons disruption of freedom while Ernst's version is a disruption of organising media/interrupting a flow.

could the redefining of stream/flow change our perception of these processes all together?

I think the cyclical nature of a throbber is imminently doom inducing, there is no end and your process is held hostage whereas in progress bars there is an end and hope and there is a visual comfort in knowing something is progressing.

how did people woke up before clocks? - Leeuwarden man who knocked on windows

- ramazan davulcusu??

- Mary smith shoots dry beans to windows

Industrial Revolution - Playtime by Tati? - it's about time??? - office hrs punch in&out

all this also reminds me of Rythmanalysis by Henri Lefebvre

Session 2 - 14-21.04

  • What does it mean to be on time? Are you on time often? Why or why not?

I think being on time indicates an expectation of time. And I think im not always on time but I try to manage expectations so being on time changes meaning as I am being late.

  • Do you find yourself in conflict with standardized time? Draw a time device/tool that embodies not being on time or in other words, being on your own time.

Session 3 - 21-28.04we went to the Telekom museum, it was awesome.

in Myanmar there is a jam problem:

The motivating factors behind specific jamming incidents are not always clear. Natural phenomena such as solar flares can degrade GPS signals. However, defense analysts agree that the recent surge in large-scale jamming comes from nation-states “driven by the desire to protect military targets” from satellite-guided missiles or drones. On April 4, Myanmar’s military was blindsided by drone attacks on Naypyidaw, the capital. A swarm of fixed-wing drones struck prominent targets including the military’s headquarters, an air base, and the residence of the junta’s leader Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing. Military-run Myawaddy TV put out a report saying the drones were shot down and there were no casualties. The People’s Defense Force (PDF), the armed wing of the opposition National Unity Government (NUG), carried out the attack.[2]

time job

I feel like time is there because we measure it and unmeasured time is nothing in a sense. When time is not observed it kinda doesn't exist? I think this is what Fred is doing!!

I also think that time attains a sort of value to something and sometimes the added value of a Thing is how we can measure time.

I am really interested in how time and rhythm go together and can create each other? Could we count to 60 and call it a clock? Is it time keeping if the time kept is short?

Is a rosary a clock? counting till you reach a point is that not a timer? maybe a timer can be converted into real-time if it runs forever just like the GPS clock?

What would define time for me though? I keep thinking about assigned value, inheritance and how time plays a huge part in re-defining the value of something.

Monetisation of (my) Presence

I think that this is happening to me in real time. I feel like I'm selling out my presence as a person not even an artist or a teacher for workshops and I don't know if that is better or worse than selling your time? At least the time sold doesn't require me to always answer a question, face somebody, be presentable, be accurate.

I realised the time parsed from recentchanges is in ISO, and looked up what that is:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_8601

From the og ISO website:

Looking for an unambiguous calendar-and-clock format that is internationally understood? It’s time for ISO 8601.

From this working draft[3]:

This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition (ISO 8601:2004), which has been technically revised with the following changes:

  • [...]
  • —  Elimination of the term "midnight" and changes to the use of the value '24' for hour. This is in response to requests from the Information Technology user communities to (1) remove ambiguities caused by the term "midnight", which has been replaced by "Beginning of day" and "End of day"; and (2) align the representation of the beginning/end of day with current de facto industry practice;

They discarded MIDNIGHT from standards in 2004...

(for time gurus only!)

omg moon bouncing IS used for earth rotation observation!!!! :

LLR measures the round-trip travel times of light pulses between stations on the earth and four retroreflectors on the surface of the Moon.[4]

But aren’t time and space smashed whenever a new paradigm for a museum is created? This indeed happened in France’s July Revolution of 1830, of which Walter Benjamin tells a story.46 Revolutionaries were shooting at clocks. They had previously also overturned the calendar, renaming months and changing their duration.

Session 3 - 06-12.05

Interview with a tool (Manetta's Class)

my tool: da needle

Needleenvironment.png
Toolsiuse.png

I chose a needle as my tool. I have been thinking about needles for a while now.

2. Pick one. Can you loosely describe the environment that this tool is embedded in? Use 3 sentences max. You can use the back of your sheet of paper.

My triangle answer:

the environment of this tool is my hand. ill hold the needle and ill hold the thread. a pin cushion, a piece of textile, a bobbin is where you can find the needle.

Here is the next step:

3. Take some time to do some research about the tool of choice. Pick one of the following angles and focus on the questions.

[angles]

  • response-ability: Where do conversations happen? Who speaks to whom? Can you feed-back? Who can you reach out to with a question?
  • pedagogical space: How does the tool invite you to learn? Where and when does learning happen? What can be learned?
  • aesthetics: What aesthetics is the tool surrounded by? Which ones does it support? Which ones not?
  • precarity: Does precarity play a role somehow? Which (financial or other) transactions are taking place?
  • cultural: In what culture(s) did this tool emerge within? Academic? Industry? Community? Artistic? And what cultural practices did emerge around this tool?
  • temporal: How does time play a role? What timelines does this tool cross with? How long can this tool be used?
  • auto-ethnography: Which specific experiences did you have with this tool? What was the context of use?
  • entanglement: Which larger environments is this tool part of? How does this tool rely on others, which can be other tools or other contexts?

A needle is a tool of bringing and making or ages. For eras it has been used by so many different communities of people. Last summer I have seen needles/needle like tools for ancient medical practices.

Such allusions occurred most frequently in emblems, as exemplified by one such image in Jacob Cats’ Sinneen Minne-Beelden & Emblemata Amores Morelgiie spectantia, Amsterdam, 1622, pp. 54-55, in which a fashionably dressed young woman embroiders while watched by cupid. The speaker relates:

“Your needle bores a hole; your thread makes the stitch. Love, treat me in the same way; keep all the same strokes. You know I am wounded by your sweet mouth. Go on, heal the pain there where you gave me the wound.”

I feel like a needle would be of a few words, direct, patient. The needle welcomes the thread. They are happy to poke. Genderful nature, they bind together. They are out of bone of a thousand years. They haven't aged a day...

I ask needle what its earliest memory is and it tells me what it has seen every day since its existence. It has seen skin, cloth, fibre, thick thread, thin ones, paper, animals, wounds. Sewn together every thing.

I ask needle what would they say if they could talk and it tells me that it has been 50.000 years[5] of talking they have been doing. Their small eye, the struggle of threading a needle has been a common tool of understanding the struggles of life. People have used it and thought through the needle how small and eye could be and how could there be ways of threading. How could I use this tool to bind anything? How can an eye so small is to heal, make, warm, gather? Still people make my eye the literary tool of comparison.

I ask the needle

Maybe it is inspiring that with time and patience my power is to create something big and strong that protects and helps. Maybe when someone looks at me they can see the power of many, small things rather than believing in one mighty.

Syrinx was a beautiful wood nymph who had many times attracted the attention of satyrs, and fled their advances in turn. She worshipped Artemis, the goddess of wilderness, and, like her, had vowed to remain a virgin for all of time. Pursued by the amorous god Pan, she ran to a river's edge and asked for assistance from the river nymphs. In answer, she was transformed into hollow water reeds that made a haunting sound when the god's frustrated breath blew across them. Pan cut the reeds to fashion the first set of panpipes, which were thenceforth known as syrinx. The word syringe is derived from this word.[8]

we got into the folder first(somethingelse) then we activated the virtual environment. then we installed chiplotle3.

> chiplotle3

> make an Inkscape file for the plotter

>on the wiki look for: plotter.write_file('FILENAME.hpgl)

if the chiplotle not working:

control D to go back to something else folder

nano /Users/designworm/.chipotle/ (press tab) config then press tab again > config.py

we are gonna chanege this:

serial_port_to_plotter_map = {'/dev/PORTNAME' : 'HP7475A'}

  /dev/tty.usbserial-1140

on a new terminal window:

> cd /dev

> ls to list all the ports

-its the one that says usb? after tty

after the port name changes:

go back to chiplotle:

>plotter = instantiate_plotters()[0]

We downloaded Virtual Box and we are making a new machine inside our machine. In one of the folders.

Josef says this is nice because we can have multiple machines in one and dont have to waste recourses like crystals, minerals etc.

First choose Basic Mode than create a new system:

my testing system

choose folder

download the operating system you want to run : Debian.inst.iso

https://www.debian.org/

silicon chip here: https://www.debian.org/distrib/netinst download arm64

Select all the predecided settings and finish your machine.

View>virtual scale 200%

su>

in root

apt install i3

sudo is installed

and then

apt install gnome

reboot

Josef helped me install i3 and open box. I missed the log in screen options at the right corner.

I managed to use i3 at the end, open box I couldn't figure out...

I also tried what Kiara tried on my brand new linux computer :

Fediverse class

Kim explained to me why it makes sense for XPUb to be in fediverse and I think the interesting thing is the house rules and how to implement a code of conduct in a digital space. I think protocols for digital online situations are harder to implement and I wouldn't even know how to do that. I think Twitter was onto something when they put the readers note in place. I remember before it was sold, the focus was on to make the posts more accessible to as many people as they could.

küçük fedrasyonalr... osmanlı vıbes

I think it really interesting that you can write your own protocols for basically anything. Like /zot can write their own 'activity pub', determining and controlling the communication between actors, etc.

how does blocking work?does that not Crete a bubble if you block everyone or is that refining your digital presence and what you re exposed to? Is digital conflict invented by microblogging? How does moderation work?

instance is a different word for server

we need to decide on how and what to be able to be searched etc.

what is the protocol followed after you step out off line

collective timeline instead of 'code of conduct' what you call the protocol matters

transparency should be implemented, how do you administer the codes?

maintenance by artists and friends rather than invisible/foreign administrators.

Knowing Things

The practice of science — indeed any practice of the collection of meaningful information — must be done by intentionally and carefully selecting inclusion criteria, methodically and repeatedly curating our data, building a model that operates according to rules we understand and can verify, and verifying the data itself with repeated tests against nature. We cannot just hoover up whatever information happens to be conveniently available with no human intervention and hope it resolves to a correct model of reality by accident. We need to look where the keys are, not where the light is.

Piling up more and more information in a haphazard and increasingly precarious pile will not allow us to climb to the top of that pile, all the way to heaven, so that we can attack and dethrone God.

Eventually, we’ll just run out of disk space, and then lose the database file when the family gets a new computer anyway.
