Of other spaces, Heterotopias
Michel Foucault

Obsession of the XIXth century : History
Themes of : development, suspension, crisis, cycle, ever-accumulating past, great preponderance of dead men, menacing glaciation of the world.
→ mythological resources to be found in 2nd principle of thermaldynamics.

Present epoch is about Space
Themes of : simultaneity, juxtaposition, near and far, side-by-side, dispersed.

Now → our experience of the world not in the shape of a line but mor elike a network connecting points, intersecting with its own skein.

Structuralism → attempt to establish an ensemble of relations between elements that could have been connected on a temporal axis, as a sort of configuration (juxtaposed, opposed etc). A manner of dealing with time and history.

Space has a history in Western experience, and one cannot ignore the intersection between space and time.

a. Medieval space (space of emplacement), hierarchic ensemble
Real life of men: sacred places, profane places, open places, protected places
Cosmology : supercelestial space, celestial space, terrestrial space

Space opened by galileo : by proving the Earth revolved around the sun he opened up to a possibily infinitly opened space. Constitution of the infinite.

“A thing's place was no longer anything but a point in its movement, stability of a thing was a slow down in its movement”

STARTING FROM XVIIth CENTURY WITH GALILEO : EXTENSION SUBSTITUTED FOR LOCALIZATION

Today : Extension became Site (extension had earlier replaced localization)
What happens : relation of proximity between elements
