Digital preservation for artists - Ben Fino-Radin


Very tangible steps can be taken by artists, collectionners and institutions.

Step 1: know what you have How much stuff do you need to care for? Inventory or list of all the material you have even, analog you wanna digitise Intellectual control → descriptive information, who owns what, what got sold to whom what do files belong to? Master list of all the things you have to deal with. How much space and think for the next 5 years.

Step 2: project your growth Annual new data? (based on new data over the year, calculate growth) When you look for storage infrastructure you know

Essential goals - establish intellectual control - centralise your assets - distribute redundantly - establish bit preservation

step 3 : Hardware For example : prosumer level RAIDs

step 4 : redundancy

Case study 1 : Corey Archangel

Already good intellectual control – automated system with identifiers for each work (example with super mario clouds, a sheet with title, identifier, technology etc listed)

Cory's functional requirements - Easy to use and maintain - x3 geographically redundant copies - effective remote accesss - system design should last at least 5 years

proposed system design: - Dropbox for business - location 1 studio - location 2 home - location 3 server - + remote access

Case study 2 : JODI: Public Access (Not yet accessible, but soon round 2016) Web based catalog resume So far their was no canonical record of their works Collective access (Open source tool for collection management) → Designed for project management, administrative management can be established. Facilitating intellectual control Organised file system


Case study 3 : Laurie Spiegel: Risk assessment Computer music pioneer. Massive archive through decades, untouched. Floppy disks, tapes etc... The archive was so colossal that a risk assessment had to be conducted. How much material she had? No one would take her archive as a whole. Initial assessment enabled to see if it was worth doing it all and establish a foundation of an archive. → continual re-assessment of the archive is also important. (every 5 years)

Need to think about the flexibility of the systems as well with Cory for instance ---> Dropbox could be removed at some point and replaced with something else.
