Part 1

  • enhances the immigration issue- home countries has different situations regarding the pandemic then the plea you are in
  • The transformations in universities- institutional, educational, social
  • Will universities exist in the future? The pandemic is going to be one of the major influences on this
  • We introduced surveillance tools that exist in the conference platforms into our education
  • Zoombombs- groups use the lack of security for racism, child pornography, etc. Zoom being a commercial company didn’t really care and didn’t want to put the money on making it safer. They claimed that this is user responsibility (like many issues with Facebook)

Part 2

  • What happened to university staff that used to take care of the physical element like key for classrooms, cleaning, etc.?
  • Zoom was not made for education and therefore we need to make up for it.
  • What happens when all the platform that are used for learning are by commercial companies?
  • How does the absence of materiality affects our learning?

Privacy concerns in zoom:

  • It’s free for schools, zoom is paying for amazon for cloud services which costs a lot. For that they will trade user data, show commercials and so on.
  • They produce statistics as well and interpret freely to suit their needs for example: they say it will be easier to monitor study behaviour and for sure they didn’t ask for the student permission to monitor them.
  • Commercial software companies became educational software companies.
  • The promise of online learning wad combined with monitoring, you can be at home but still be monitored. So privacy is not a part of this industry.

Part 3

  • Why did a lot of universities chose licenses instead of a public infrastructures? It was a time and pressure issue. The problem is that so much money was “burnt” on licenses and companies that don’t have any liability for the university.
  • As pressure builds on zoom, universities will be subjected to pressure as well. Why would universities want to b subjected to this pressure when they can be independent?
  • Why would you pick a tool like zoom that is hard to change (like solving the zoom bombs situation) for your own needs? Furthermore, you want to provide IT support that is suited for your needs and moral values (zoom call centre is in the Philippines).
  • Who has the liability for this? Zoom? The university?
  • Would the surveillance issue prevent people from researching what you want? Or to do some kind of academic experiment?
  • Zoom is a large company has an interest in keeping the university online. There is a marketing strategy.
  • The international students strategy is falling apart.
  • Universities want to keep revenue by keeping everything online. If they think they will compete online they will enter the online education market. There will be a competition on the grounds of the brand of the university.
  • Online will always look cheaper

Part 4

  • Covid sped up the going online of universities so we can see it very clearly.
  • Put effort in solidarity and keeping the university structure
  • Refusal is an option- refusing to use the technological tools because of moral and ethical issues.
  • This is a time for change, institutions are very open for change at the moment
