Apparently, there is a strong connection between my two works, and the current script is summarising the content of the previous video, while giving these conceptual, abstract images, sounds, figures a story, a context to present them.

I think I will spend some time on character design next before painting, because I don't want the time line of this work be so long, so I could only show the character changes and choices through the change of his appearance, for example, if there’s person who is stubborn, then his appearance will look different with those who are gentle and soft.

I think I can show my scripts to my friends and classmates, they may gave me some of their imagination towards the story, and also I need some technical advices , for instance, how to choose a proper frame rates and whether using software to creat.

My recent work ‘Improvisation’ is a video which focus on a subject that the strict manipulation of online world in China has brought people in a post-truth era, those historical events, people and things that have been removed deliberately will still have an impact on social development despite they disappear in the virtual world, so I have been thinking about whether the truth will become more and more difficult to reach online, And with the tightening of censorship and the disappearance of real history, will our social identity fall into nihilism as the virtual world continues to collapse? But ‘Improvisation’ is just like the name, it's actually a visual note, I spent a couple of months filling it. When I was doing research I will have some sudden ideas, sometimes it’s an image or a single word, sometimes it will be a story… I continued stacking and collaging images, texts , sounds , music that I could think of. It will be a strong visual reference before I come to the formal creation.

I wrote a script currently, but it’s still untitled for now, and It will be a short animation film: A long time ago, people's shadows had their own eyes, the human’s eyes see the part that was illuminated by the light, and the shadow's eyes see the secret hidden in the shadow. The story happened in a small town with a silent monster sit on the hill for years. One day, the monster on the hill broke into the town and attacked on some people, breaking the previous harmony, and the people in the town fell into a huge panic. The government quickly worked out a response to soothe the public. They launched a new pill, once people take it, the monster will disappear in front of their eyes. But it seems that only a 12-year-old boy—Ming, noticed the unusualness of the pill, so he decided not to take it and find out the truth about the monster alone…

Apparently, there is a strong connection between my two works, and the current script is summarising the content of the previous video, while giving these conceptual, abstract images, sounds, figures a story, a context to present them.

The biggest difference between the two works is the structure. The first video has no logic, all I need to do is recording what I think of and what I find out. But the second one is a complete story, provide all those abstract visual elements a context.

Questions

  • Did you feel like you had to make the more abstract work first to know what you want to tell in the more concrete narrative story?
  • Please show more of your process (in images and through description). It would be great to see your process as a collector and maker of images. It would be interesting to see this process of translation)?

My recent work ‘Improvisation’ is a video which focus on the issue that the strict manipulation of online world has brought people in a post-truth era, those historical events, people and things that have been removed deliberately will still have an impact on social development despite they disappear in the virtual world, so in this video I would like to explore whether the truth will become more and more difficult to reach online, And with the tightening of censorship and the disappearance of real history, will our social identity fall into nihilism as the virtual world continues to collapse?

I wrote a script currently, but it’s still untitled for now, and It will be a short animation film: A long time ago, people's shadows had their own eyes, the human’s eyes see the part that was illuminated by the light, and the shadow's eyes see the secret hidden in the shadow. My current work is an adjustment to the last video,in the first video I use a poem to connect all my visual elements and video materials, but the poem is relatively abstract, which made people can't get my point directly, so I decided to change the poem to a story, let all the visual elements and figures as the story characters to participate in a specific event, so that it will not like the previous video, each visual element is separated, and the whole structure looks very fragmented.

The biggest difference between the two works is the structure. The first video is more abstract like a visual note, most of the contents are some metaphorical visual elements, the structure and logic are not very clear. The second work takes the story as the background, so the fictional visual elements interact as the characters in the story to promote the plot. So it is relatively complete, and the elements are no longer illogically stacked. The meaning of the existence of each visual element and the implied ideas will also be more direct and accurate.

I think I will spend some time on character design next before painting, because I don't want the time line of this work be so long, so I could only show the character changes and choices through the change of his appearance, for example, if there’s person who is stubborn, then his appearance will look different with those who are gentle and soft.

I think I can show my scripts to my friends and classmates, because there are still some problems in the script, such as the choices of people other than the protagonist. I can organise the suggestions given by different people and the different feelings towards the story, shape other characters in the script through this way.I need some technical advices , for instance, how to choose a proper frame rates and whether using software to continue.

And with the tightening of censorship and the disappearance of real history, will our social identity fall into nihilism as the virtual world continues to collapse?

[Could you give some details about the video’s visual language and structure? How long is it? How would you describe it as a work? Reading your description below about your process, this sounds like an experimental, collage-based work to me.]

But ‘Improvisation’ is just like the name, it's actually a visual note, I spent a couple of months filling [filming?] it. When I was doing research I will have some sudden ideas, sometimes it’s an image or a single word, sometimes it will be a story… I continued stacking and collaging images, texts , sounds , music that I could think of. It will be a strong visual reference before I come to the formal creation.

[This is a really intriguing account of your process. I would like to see you develop this in more detail. You can introduce this topic by beginning with a clear statement, e.g. ‘I took an experimental, improvisatory approach to making this film.’ Could you give more detail about what research you undertook, and give examples of what sudden ideas you had?] [You could introduce your new project more clearly e.g. the project I am now working on…]

I wrote a script currently, but it’s still untitled for now, and It will be a short animation film: A long time ago, people's shadows had their own eyes, the human’s eyes see the part that was illuminated by the light, and the shadow's eyes see the secret hidden in the shadow. [Indicate to the reader that you are now returning to the topic of your current film, and how you will develop it]
