Culture of Solidarity Fund

In 2020 the Culture of Solidarity Fund was launched to support cultural initiatives that, in the midst of turmoil and crisis, reinforce European solidarity and the idea of Europe as a shared public space. Since then they have launched 7 editions ranging from supporting cultural actors in the Corona crisis, regional and thematic editions, to dedicated Ukraine editions.

Artist Start

"Are you at the beginning of your career as a visual artist and do you have plans for new work? If so, you may be eligible for an Artist Start grant from the Mondriaan Fund."

This fund is designed for recently graduated fine arts students to start their career and get support for a year to focus on their work. They can spend the money they want in order to support their life and work. Key info:

  • at least 1 year after graduating from fine arts;
  • up to 4 years after graduating from fine arts;
  • on your diploma it has to be written "fine arts" and/or your practice has to be in visual arts;
  • grant: 22,000 EUR - for a period of a year to stimulate your artistic practice;
  • you need to present an idea of a plan how to develop your practice over the year;
  • can apply for it until it happens - if you get rejected you can do it again in 1 year;
  • it is considered a popular grant and has other perks too - exhibition prospects, mentoring programme;
  • no deadline to apply;
  • in one year they receive around 200 applications from which around 73-90 get funded;
  • the criteria is quality; to be embedded in the Dutch art scene; to be resident in the Netherlands.

Artist Basic

"Do you want to expand your oeuvre, make your work more visible, carry out research or conduct experiments? If so, you may be eligible for an Artist Basic grant."

This one is when you had 4+ years of art practice in the dutch art scene and you are looking for support to develop further your career, make a research or else, and get support for two years. Key info:

  • stimulates you to continue developing your practice, to further expand your career;
  • 45,000 EUR - for 2-4 years;
  • you can apply multiple times;
  • no deadline;
  • the criteria is quality; to be embedded in the Dutch art scene; to be resident in the Netherlands.

Artist Project

"Do you want to complete a concrete plan within a specific working period? Are you contemplating an apprenticeship or a working period in the Netherlands or another country? If so, you may be eligible for an Artist Project grant."

Additional info:

  • can pay to other people and add it in the budget
  • no deadline
  • can also be for a residency, a project, a research - quite broad

On collective projects

This fund is more designed for individual support. If there is a collective project, it can be either applied by one artist; or each one of the people involved has to submit their application (for the same project).

Residency grant=

"Visual artists, curators, art critics and art observers who wish to deepen their professional practices and expand their networks are eligible to apply for a working period in the Netherlandsor another country at one of the recognized residencies offered by the Mondriaan Fund."

  • applications in spring and fall
  • there is a list of residency they collaborate with

Documents to apply for those grants:

  • artistic statement
  • artistic cv - only artistic practice
  • formal docs - registration of address, copy of diploma, …
  • project - you can ask for a flexible amount of money (for materials etc.)
  • don’t need to be self-employed
  • have to inform the tax office - given in two transfers over two years, so it’s not high tax

Criteria:

  • embedded in the dutch art field - live here (bsn, address registration, cv - what am I doing here) - netherlands active artist
  • 1 year of autonomous practice as a visual artist (gallery, museum etc.)
  • visual arts practice (not design)
