LB2: Renzo Martens Artist Visit

On Thursday 30th April, Lens-Based Media will host visual artist Renzo Martens at the PZI. We will discuss his socially-engaged practice and screen his confronting documentaries which employ radical critique to build a new world.

Artist Bio

Renzo Martens (1973) is best understood through the reactions he provokes. “Martens manages to criticize all layers of the art world, with the aim of changing it forever” (Het Parool). Martens activates art as a tool to dismantle and denounce systems in which he is implicated, using only instruments designed to support those systems. Through his challenging and divisive documentaries, namely ‘White Cube’ (2020) and ‘Episode III: Enjoy Poverty’ (2008), he exposes the economic inequities and cruelty endemic to capitalism and the art world.

Through his ongoing collaboration with artist cooperative CATPC in Lusanga, Congo, they re-gentrify a former Unilver plantation to bring about the post-plantation. “With the proceeds from their artwork, CATPC buys back land and farms it using ecological methods, to replenish soil devastated by Unilever’s monocultural farming techniques” (Alice Gregory, New Yorker). CATPC was founded in 2014 by René Ngongo, the Congolese environmentalist. CATPC and their Dutch sister organisation Human Activities, founded by Renzo Martens, built the White Cube in Lusanga, the first contemporary art museum on a plantation.
