Artist Bio

Renzo Martens (1973) is best understood through the reactions he provokes. “Martens manages to criticize all layers of the art world, with the aim of changing it forever” (Het Parool). Martens employs art as a tool to dismantle and denounce systems in which he understands himself to be implicated, using only instruments designed to support those systems. Through his challenging and probing documentaries, namely ‘White Cube’ (2020) and ‘Enjoy Poverty’ (2008), he exposes the economic inequities and cruelty endemic to capitalism and the art world. By exposing institutional contradictions, and laying new economic pipelines for destitute communities, he ‘re-gentrifies’ post-plantations and gives them the capital to build and grow their futures.
