Modernity at Large - Arjun Appadurai

• due to the multiplicity of forms of electronic media and speed at which they infiltrate daily life, they provide resources for self-imagining as an everyday social project

• as migratory populations invoke media from all over the world, they create disporic public spheres that defy the importance of the nation-state as the key arbiter of important social change

• electronic mediation and mass migration mark the world not as new forces but as ones that impel the work of the imagination. they create specific irregularities as both viewers and images are in simultaneous circulation. neither fit into political boundaries.

• the imagination has become a collective social fact, building on tech changes over the past century. this is the basis of the plurality of imagined worlds.

•
