“There is a story when Attle entered Dowing Street in 1945, one of his younger aids suggested that No. 10 should acquire one of the new telex machines, just then on the market. Attle dismissed the idea. The Foreign Office had plenty of clerks who could bring their telegrams across at any time. But he did agree to have one machine on a months approval, and one afternoon notice up-to-the minute cricket scores clattering outfit of it. He proposed that the telex be retained , but always thereafter referred to it as the “the cricket machine”. We accept new modes and new technologies when they are justified by established needs.”
