On Friday the 24th of May Claire and I will perform together on the Lubunya Queer Party: Benefit for Istanbul LGBT Pride. This is a screenshot of the rehearsal video for that. In tutorial David mentioned Vanessa Beecroft as a reference when I was explaining my ideas about Claire's costume. She might be interesting to reference in the thesis.

Performance Rehearsals #2
For Performance Rehearsals #2 I am working with Lesley Quist who has been doing drag since this year. I am interested in creating these works that are about how rolemodels are channeled through our actions. Their influences in our bodies. Drag culture is an obvious and fascinating subject for that. At this point I am creating lots of material that will consist of the construction and transformation to an actual piece that links to the age old tradition in drag culture that is lipsyncing or a recent term faceography. The role of queen goes hand in hand with a taking of power. These are a few things I want to express with these video and installation pieces.

Performance #1
Performance #1 is a first try out at a live performance within my practice. The performance was about 20 minutes long and audience as well as Claire were being filmed by Yoana Buzova. Performance #1 ran during the Open House at Piet Zwart in our studio space. This piece will be expanded with two more dancers and hopefully will be performed again once I find a location. Below are two wide shots of the set as well as a screenshot of the video. The visuals I am using so far are the huge blue screen and the tape used for dancefloors. I want the gallery to eventually reference to the stage. Giving queues to the visitor to interact with.

At the moment I am working on a soundpiece to create a loud bass that vibrates from one corner of the room to another, going back and forth. Thus giving the performance a rhythm and the audience a queue that a change is happening within each travel of sound.

Performance Rehearsals #1 (working with Claire van Lubeek)
After having tutorials with David and Alison it became clear to me that I wanted to start getting in touch with performers by putting out an open call. First to respond was performance artist Claire van Lubeek and I immediately met with her, reserved a room and started rehearsing a piece of work with her. I documented everything during this process.

This video was day one. The following screenshots and video are from day two.

Day two: In the end we created a choreography pattern that would repeat itself. In between long silences and occasional bestial roars.

The idea is that, after the discussion with Alison, I will be using a wig. Since hair is a recurring object in my work she suggested I would make it a thing. Hence big hair. The stage might even be covered in hair. Claire will be on a platform I will create, with tube lights surrounding her.
Hester Scheurwater
I saw Hester Scheurwater's work in the Frank Taal Gallery last week. Her artist statement is all sorts of amazing.

"The mirrored self-images encompass my private fantasies. They are my way of reacting on the imitated and fake media images, which are constantly calling upon our imagination, without intending to be taken too seriously. I try to deconstruct this call’s effect with my reactions by switching the ’subject-object’ relationship, without being victimised by it. My self-images show I am not a victim of an imposed sexually charged visual culture, instead I give a self-aware answer, in which I try to show my feelings and/or views on the unreal and fake imagery, which is forced upon us daily. This series of photos emerged from a collection of daily uploads on Facebook and my personal blog. In the digital public space, I try to reinforce the exhibitionist nature by presenting them in the context of a living room or a living room setting. In this context exhibitionism and voyeurism come together. Using my own body as a sex object in corresponding poses and an auto-erotic gaze I study voyeurism and exhibitionism."

Music Video
I was experimenting with DaVinci Resolve. Recently downloaded it and was trying it out. It's interesting to look back at the footage I shot in this music video prototype. I was directing her after each take we shot and eventually it became a choreographed performance. I think it's kind of interesting to think about choreography as something where both your body and your mind want to do the same things. The mind is telling the body to move as perfectly as possible. To practice the movement and attitude until the point arrives where the mind no longer has to think about proprioception and everything happens naturally.

I've rewatched the documentary The Artist is Present by Marina Abramovic. There's just so much in this documentary about the performance. ====Piano concert====
Was filming to see if there would be a recognizable change in the way this man was acting when he started to play his music. Never really happened. Apparently you can make any place into a small stage for performance, though that does not always allow for a person to transform into the stage persona. This turned out to be more of a situation where someone who happens to play the piano as a hobby just plays a little something for people to enjoy for about an hour.

The Artist is Present
I've rewatched the documentary The Artist is Present by Marina Abramovic. There's just so much in this documentary about the performance. ====Piano concert====
Was filming to see if there would be a recognizable change in the way this man was acting when he started to play his music. Never really happened. Apparently you can make any place into a small stage for performance, though that does not always allow for a person to transform into the stage persona. This turned out to be more of a situation where someone who happens to play the piano as a hobby just plays a little something for people to enjoy for about an hour.

At the moment I am working on a soundpiece together with Tobias Groot to create a loud bass that vibrates from one corner of the room to another, going back and forth.

The Artist is Present
I've rewatched the documentary The Artist is Present by Marina Abramovic. There's just so much in this documentary about the performance. And I think this brings me out of the box of a more theatre-like performance and also adds the magic of performance art.

About living the fantasy. Using anime/manga/cartoons to escape reality and be whoever we want to be. Sometimes even have superpowers. Using the persona, re-enactment. To have a successful persona is to completely forget about the self.

At the moment I am working on a soundpiece together with Tobias Groot to create a loud bass that vibrates from one corner of the room to another, going back and forth.

A Project A Day Keeps The Doctor Away

The Artist is Present
I've rewatched the documentary The Artist is Present by Marina Abramovic. There's just so much in this documentary about the performance. And I think this brings me out of the box of a more theatre-like performance and also adds the magic of performance art. Here are my notes from it.

Piano concert
Was filming to see if there would be a recognizable change in the way this man was acting when he started to play his music. Never really happened. Apparently you can make any place into a small stage for performance, though that does not always allow for a person to transform into the stage persona. This turned out to be more of a situation where someone who happens to play the piano as a hobby just plays a little something for people to enjoy for about an hour.

Carrie Bradshaw's Group Therapy
About how Sex and the City taught us all about life in NYC and the therapeutical reflecting main character Carrie Bradshaw, played by Sarah Jessica Parker. Tv Shows teach us how to live our lives and solve our problems. Though SATC is not the most heteronormative tv show.

Cosplay
About living the fantasy. Using anime/manga/cartoons to escape reality and be whoever we want to be. Sometimes even have superpowers. Using the persona, re-enactment. Putting Beyoncé and Cosplay together makes me think of the second lives. The separation between the persona and the every day life 'self'. To have a successful persona is to completely forget about the self.

Dennis van Vreden (NL) is an artist living in Rotterdam whose practice has ranged from painting to interactive installation. Pop culture has been the main theme and biggest influence in his latest work. His first show ビヨンセ! Biyonse was an interactive piece where the user's movements were re-enacted by a digital projection of Beyoncé set in an environment that resembles Botticelli's Birth of Venus. In his latest event he directs his first live performance, properly named Performance #1 which deals with the behavioral patterns of a performing artist.

They Touched Beyoncé is an ongoing series of performances, rehearsals and video pieces. In this work he has directed various artists and explores the notion of performance through its commanding power, re-enactment and idolization.

Those of you who have been working in Aymeric's seminar will continue to read and comment on each other's texts

Those who have not will form a group and read each other's texts

In both groups the reader communicates to the writer what the text gave them to understand.

The aim over the next few weeks is to get the draft into good shape ahead of the interim assessment (25 March), by which time the project and the thesis must both have a clear direction and structure.

If you are unable to make the seminar please give notice of absence
Here are some notes that may help as a guide:

NOTES ON WRITING A THESIS

The written thesis is a crucial part of any Master Project and needs to be carefully planned from the start. What follows are some notes to guide you in the construction of your thesis, according to a chosen format. Make use of the guidance available in other informational documents – including the PZI Programme Handbook and the PZI Proposal Guide.

I. THESIS AIMS

The main purpose of the thesis is to articulate in writing issues, questions and ideas that inform or shape your practice.

Think of the thesis, regardless of what form it takes, as a parallel activity to the body of work you are developing for your graduation – a parallel text supported by images. The thesis can combine different kinds of discourse, each of which may have different, yet overlapping, functions (see examples under “Thesis Formats” below). With your writing tutor, you will establish which form of writing is most appropriate for your practice, develop a relationship between writing and practice, and learn to consider your writing as an integral part of your practice, as a medium of reflection and production.

II. THESIS Formats

The written thesis is produced in parallel to a Graduate project. It is meant to demonstrate your ability to articulate aesthetic and critical issues that emerge from your practice, as well as historical and theoretical contexts that you are responding to and are aiming to shape. The horizon of the written thesis, like the Graduate project you exhibit as a requirement for graduation, is that it is suitable for publication (i.e. to be read by professionals, peers, and a broader public). The role of the written thesis in relation to exhibited Graduate Project may vary:

1) It can take the form of a report on practice and research. Here, "research" has an open definition, but one that you must be able to articulate clearly. It will be presented alongside a body of work that is directly addressed in the report.

2) It can take the form of an analytical essay exploring related artistic, theoretical, historical and critical issues and practices that inform your practice, without necessarily referring to your work directly. The essay will, however, be evaluated against the exhibited body of work, and you will be asked to articulate in the Project Proposal and in the final assessment how your written thesis informs the aesthetic, theoretical and technical choices in your body of work.

3) The presentation of a text as a body of work is possible, but requires close consultation with your advising tutors and your writing tutors. With this option, you will have to establish whether your Graduate Project and thesis are one and the same, or whether they form two distinct components. The form that your text may take is more open, but you are required to demonstrate research, as well as critical and theoretical mastery of the concepts that inform the choice of form.

4) A combination of options 1), 2) or 3) is also possible, in which case the text as body of work is distinct from the part that constitutes a report or an analytical essay. In this case, the roles of the different textual materials comprising your thesis should be clearly articulated in your Project Proposal.

Examples of what the different formats could include, are:

• a descriptive account of developing ideas, processes and products, along with an analytical critique of your work and its formative processes
• a narrative that traces a web of relationships – contextualizing your work in relation to other practitioners, practices and artworks, situating your work within relevant theoretical, philosophical, aesthetic and other fields of knowledge
• an in-depth reflection on an artistic, literary, historical, critical or other practice which is inspirational to your own
• a more creative or poetic discourse that that may be analogous to, or have structural affinities with, your body of work – shedding light on the themes, methods and visual signs that you have been exploring
• a series of diagrams, tables and visualizations charting the progress of ideas and forms using textual alongside other material
• a piece of artistic writing experimenting with formats of creative writing, authorship or publishing

III. THESIS REQUIREMENTS

The thesis presented as part requirement for the award of the Master of Fine Art degree is normally equivalent to not fewer than 7,000 words and not more than 8,000 words. In the case that you choose to combine your Graduate Project and thesis, meaning your entire Graduate Project is text-based, the number of words appropriate to your writing will have to be determined with the Course Director, your advising tutors and your writing tutor.

With the report on practice and research (option 1) you are required:

• to provide an analytical account of the development of your work (thinking processes as well as material processes) in relation to the aims and objectives identified in your Project Proposal
• to locate your work in relation to appropriate contexts (for example: relevant theories, ideas, historical and/or contemporary art and design practices)
• to evaluate critically your body of work as a whole, against clearly formulated criteria

With the analytical essay (option 2) the requirements are very similar:

• to provide an analytical account of the development of artistic practice, theoretical, historical or cultural phenomena (thinking processes as well as material processes) in relation to the aims and objectives identified in your Graduate Project Proposal
• to create appropriate contexts for your practice (for example by writing about relevant theories, ideas, historical or contemporary art and design practices)
• to evaluate critically your body of work as a whole, against clearly formulated criteria

With the text as a body of work (option 3) the requirements are again somewhat similar:

• to demonstrate, by way of your artistic or experimental writing, an analytical approach to the development of artistic practice, theoretical, historical or cultural phenomena (thinking processes as well as material processes) in relation to the aims and objectives identified in your Project Proposal
• to create appropriate contexts for your practice (for example by supplementing your work with an experimental form of writing which develops relevant theories, ideas, historical or contemporary art and design practices)
• to evaluate critically your body of work as a whole, against clearly formulated criteria

However, you will need to provide a preface or appendix if your approach does not perform the above.

And here is some practical help:

At the moment I am working on a soundpiece together with Tobias Groot to create a loud bass that vibrates from one corner of the room to another, going back and forth.

A Project A Day Keeps The Doctor Away

The Artist is Present
I've rewatched the documentary The Artist is Present by Marina Abramovic. There's just so much in this documentary about the performance. And I think this brings me out of the box of a more theatre-like performance and also adds the magic of performance art.
