PARALLEL LIVES, PARALLEL AESTHETICS León Ferrari & Gülsün Karamustafa Parallel Lives, Parallel Aesthetics displays the works of two artists from beyond Europe - who have more than earned their spurs elsewhere. Both Ferrari and Karamustafa respond to the changes and conflicts taking place in their homelands. Hailing from different corners of the world, their cultural and geo-political histories show surprising parallels.

The work and lives of León Ferrari and Gülsün Karamustafa converge and intersect on multiple levels. Both respond to authoritarian governments that do not support freedom of speech: a situation characteristic of the issues facing many countries today, including in Europe. As well as parallels, there are also differences between the artists. Karamustafa reflects on male-female relations in a changing Turkey, and the loss of Istanbul’s multicultural climate; Ferrari responds to the influence of Western, Christian civilization on South America and on dictatorship in Argentina. The exhibition includes never before shown pieces by the artist. Karamustafa will be producing a new artwork especially for this solo exhibition, and there is a talk you can listen to beforehand: https://vanabbemuseum.nl/en/programme/programme/artist-talk-guelsuen-karamustafa/ More info: https://vanabbemuseum.nl/en/programme/programme/parallel-lives-parallel-aesthetics/

DELINKING AND RELINKING New collection display Featuring 120 pieces of art and spanning all five floors of the museum’s collection wing, Delinking and Relinking invites you to experience art differently. Sometimes in the literal sense, by touching, smelling or listening to it; other times metaphorically, by giving expression to different, lesser-known voices. Mostly inspiring and occasionally confrontational, Delinking and Relinking spans more than a century of art history, with Hommage à Apollinaire by Marc Chagall from 1913 as earliest work and This Means Tableau from 2019 by Laure Prouvost as most recent work.

With over 25 multi-sensory tools, including texts in Braille, scent interpretations, tactile drawings and soundscapes, Delinking and Relinking aims for an enriching and inclusive experience. There are five different media tours to guide you through the exhibition; from the Family Tour to the Bodily Encounters Tour, the Love Letters Tour or The Broader Story Tour. You can access the tours for free by downloading the Smartify app on your smartphone (Google Play store) (Apple store). The exhibition was developed in collaboration with various experts in the field of physical accessibility. Also consulted were The Office of Queer Affairs and Wie Zijn Wij (Who Are We), two interest groups that have a long-standing working relationship with the museum to help introduce broader perspectives to the museum.
