Angharad notes on Tracy
Tracy - Mike Kelley
Kelley discusses his assimilation into 60s/70s counterculture in the US. From his working class background and involvement in the white panthers a local movement in Detroit. Explaining his route to the avant grade Kelley outlines the development in psychedelic culture, its subsumption into popular culture / the mainstream. Simultaneous to this, the 60s marked the energetic emergence of empathy in what was once the complacent white youth as a reaction to their conscription to the army. Kelley draws a parallel between this reaction with a rise in empathy with the other - woman, homosexuality and queer communities.
