Niles red a conversation with Michael Snow about his music and art practice. He sees those to practices as two separate practices, even if they have similarities. When he plays music he uses improvisation a lot and he sees music as sections that he put together to lager parts of music. When he plays he also tries to challenge the norm of playing an instrument. For example he tries to play the piano in a non-hieratical way between the left and the right hand an in this way create more of a liner way of playing. They way he looks up on sound recording as layering is also something resonance in his film making and artistic practice. In one project he begged 29 people to read in a list of different mayors in Quebec, then he played them back on top of each other to investigate how pronunciation can change the meaning of a word. When he dose films, he also thinks that it is more about composition then about improvisation. He believe that it is only in idiosyncratic films, sound and images can melt together the bordered between sound and film dissolve.
