Do you think reading is associated with being politically engaged?
A conscientious vlogger can be more engaged.
When I write I like it do so in the register of the spoken. I made a big mistake once, I wrote a text for someone in a film. The reader was a French person, but i gave her such horrible words to work with, they were very long and unfriendly to the French tongue. So I did learn from that, if you are writing for somebody to read it really has to have breath. When I write I read back to myself. Some say there’s a writerly pace and there’s a readerly pace but i try not to distinguish between them. I try to make things understandable as possible.
What kind of books did you like reading as a child?
I liked Mervin Peak’s Gormenghast Trilogy. . .. I suppose they are the equivalent of Game of Thrones today… then Dostoevsky and Tolstoy , but I didn’t understand them, they were about Russia or something. I started with fiction and there was a lot of magic realism and stuff at that time, things like Marquez and Kundera. Then I started to read theory and one morning I woke up in a skip.
Do you sometimes gather with your family and read together?
That’s a nice description of intimacy, where a group of people silently read together. When this happens I nudge my partner and whisper --- “wahoo, this is nice isn’t it, just like civilized people. Learning to read is really fast, it only takes a few months.
Do you think that reading is a necessity? or do you think it has to be taught? It has to be taught, there’s a social value, all those culturally imbibed values. I’ve changed my mind big time that its absolutely a technology that’s ingrained in our society, we are a literate society, we are completely shaped by that as subjects, i knew that intellectually, but for hundreds of thousands of years societies existing perfectly fine without the alphabet.
