What do you want to make?

A short film telling fictional story about a civilization living on a planet far away, that’s set in a miniature world. The few characters communicate with their own language. Being obscured from their ego and having not seen their reflection before, it’s immediately felt that their world is very different. It includes symbolism and investigates themes of origin of language, influence of knowledge and social order and absence of ego.

How do you plan to make it?

I will be making the miniature set and the characters, after finalizing the set I will film and the process of post-production will start. The process includes recording voice over, doing the sound design and the editing the film.

What is your timetable?

I am still not sure about how long this project will take but I don’t want to rush and let it organically develop, I am planning to finish shooting until the end of January, and finish the edit in March, if not, it can end up being the graduation project as it has a lot of elements to work on and bring together that will take time.

Why do you want to make it?

I believe in the potential of telling a story in a non-traditional way to trigger thoughts that can be a beginning of something bigger I am really interested in building worlds and constructing an experience for the audience. I want to reflect my own questions and dilemmas in an open-ended way.

Who can help you and how?

An art director could help me to finalize the set and give feedback as is it a crucial part of the project.

The DP who I will work together will also be helping to shoot as I want to focus on making the set and planning the shots. Discussing shots with the DP and brainstorming together can help to come up with innovative ways to use the film language.

Relation to previous practice

My previous practice focused on exploring the methods of evoking emotions, setting a strong mood and telling a story through a non-traditional approach. Similarly, the world is dystopian and it’s entirely designed. The way both practices use the universal film language to establish the mood is quite similar and intends to subtly convey emotions and tell a story that the audience can relate to. Another relation between the works would be the way the character represents a layer or a concept and uses the same medium to establish it. In both works I keep a part of the story open to interpretation so that the audience can perceive it on a personal level.

Relation to a larger context

After exploring my passion towards creating a small world and telling a story through that medium, I want to follow the same methods to tell my stories. I feel that it gives me the creative freedom I thrive from. I’m quite intrigued by pursuing the idea of looking at the world through a different scale.

In addition, I would like to spend more time on creating a characters and the world.
